MASS ESTIMATION

Weight minimization - utmost importance

high- performance designs

snowball effect increased weight of one component

means added weight elsewhere

MASS ESTIMATION WITH LTH/DLR-METHOD

(DLR) published a simple, parametric method in the German Aeronautical Handbook (Luftfahrt Technisches Handbuch - LTH)

To estimate the mass of major aircraft components.

The method "Large Civil Jet Transport (MTOM > 40t), Statistical Mass Estimation, MA401".

Page 5: Mass estimation

Comparison of the LTH Statistical Mass Estimation, MA401", method with "Torenbeek" with respect to approach and accuracy.

Improvised Raymer method and Roskam method has also been included as part of the project work.

TORENBEEK METHOD(1978)

An accurate weight prediction in the preliminary

design stage is a most effective way to control

the weight

begins with a consistent scheme for weight

subdivision and limitations.

useful for most categories of modern civil

aircraft.

LTH(LUFTFAHRT TECHNISCHEN HANDBUCH )

LTH engineering work in all phases of material development,

in-service use of aerial vehicles and flight equipment.

Financial support ("LTH-Mittel für Fremdleistungen")

Grants German Federal Ministry of Defense from Research and

Technology budget items.

MA-401

compute the MME, OME.

Maximum Take Of Mass (MTOM) >40t

70 or more passenger seats in a typical

layout.

The sum of the component masses results in

the MME respectively OME of the aircraft

IMPROVISED RAYMER METHOD

Kx=1.143, for Passenger Aircraft Kx=1.0923 , for Business Jet
