INTRODUCTION: Coupling is a device used to connect two shaft

together for the purpose of tramisting power or torque.

For good coupling, it is essential to transmit complete power and torque.

It is used to reduce the transmission of shock loads from one shaft to another shaft also used to connect driving and driven parts.

TYPES OF COUPLING :There are three main important type of coupling as follow:1.Rigid coupling 3.Sleeve coupling

2.Flexible coupling

RIGID COUPLING: In this coupling the alignment of two shaft should be

proper. It is use two connect two separate systems such as

motor and generator or motor & pump. The components present in rigid coupling are as follow: 1.Flanges 2.Shafts 3.Nut and bolt 4.Keys

FLANGE: The material use for flange is mild steel. It is a main part of rigid coupling which has following manufacturing process: 1.Cutting 2.Heating 3.Forging and rolling 4.Drilling 5.Surface finishing 6.Anti-rust coating

(The flange can be made by casting process also)

1.CUTTING: This is a process done to cut the raw material as per the requirement, weight& dimension. For this we can use cutting machine or water jet cutter.

2.HEATING This is the second process done on cutting part. The part is heated at high temperature but below recrystallization temperature.

3.Forging and rolling:

In this material is forge into desire shape by using closed dies.

After giving the shape the rolling process is done by using cup shape die.

4.Drilling:The part is drilled at the pitch circle diameter where the bolts is fitted.According to application of number of bolts , the drilling is done.

5.Surface polishing: Surface polishing is done by using emery paper or polishing machine

6.Anti-Rust coating:This is done to protect the flange from rust by using spray method.

SHAFT The material use for making shaft is ductile material like Plain carbon steel. It is generally made by extrusion process or rolling process

Extrusion process In this semi molten material is pushed through a die of desire cross section. It is use to produce shaft, pipe , wires etc.

NUT AND BOLT This are used to fit the two component or two objects. The material used for making the nut and bolt is cast iron.

These are made by following process:

1.Cutting2.Drilling 3.Surface cutting4.Upset forming

Upset forming:

It increases the diameter of work piece by compressing its length. It is use to produce head of bolt The heated material is fit into die and the force is applied along its length.

Hence it takes the head shape of the bolt.

Keys It is made up of cast iron It is a mechanical element which is inserted between the shaft and hub in order to prevent

the relative motion between them. Manufacturing processes for key: 1.Surface cutting tool 2.Milling machine 3.Filing 4.Surface finishing (keys can be made by turning process on the lathe machine or CNC machine)

1.Surface cutting tool:It is a cutting machine use to cut the material in desired dimension.The machine is know as keyseating machine.

2.Miling machineParallel, tapered and wood ruff key can be produce on miling machine

3.Filing It is used to give the desire shape. The key way is roughed out by using filing tool.

4.Surface finishing It is a last process which gives the clean surface finish It is done by emery paper or polishing tool machine.
