Magnetic &Thermal Energy Storage

SuperconductingMagnetic Energy Storage

This System Stores Energy in magnetic field created by flow of direct currents in a superconducting coil.

The coil is cryogenically cooled to critical temperature.

The stored energy can be released back to the network by discharging the coil.

Benefits of SMES Over Other Storage

Time delay during charge and discharge is quite short.

Loss of power is less High reliability.

Application To provide very clean power in microchip

manufacture. Suitable to mitigate the negative impacts of

renewable energy in power quality related issues.

Thermal Energy Storage TES is helpful for balancing between the

supply and demand of energy Thermal energy storage (TES) is defined as

the temporary holding of thermal energy in the form of hot or cold substances for later utilization.

ClassificationSensible Heat Storage.:-i. Liquid Media Storage ii. Solid Media Storage iii. Dual Media Storage Latent Heat Storage.

Sensible Heat Storage In this type , thermal energy is stored by

virtue of heat capacity and change in temperature

When energy is absorbed temperature of storage material rises and when energy is withdrawn temperature drops.

Based on Storage media it is classified as:-

Liquid Media StorageWater is considered to be the most suitable

liquid media storage becauseIt is easy to handleHigh density, good thermal conductivityIt can be used as a storage medium or

working mediumControl of water system is flexible

Short Term Thermal Energy Storage

Long Term Thermal Energy Storage

Solid Medium Storage It is called Packed bed storage. It utilises the heat capacity of a bed of loosely

packed solid material to store energyHere energy can be used at low or high

temperature

Packed Bed Storage Unit

AdvantagesRocks are abundant, low cost, non toxicHigh storage temperature are possibleNo freezing or boiling problemNo corrosion problem,

DisadvantagesStorage volume is very largeHigh pressure drop takes placeSimultaneous Charging and Discharging is

not possible

Dual Medium StorageIn this both liquid and Solid sensible heat

storage material are usedThese slid and liquid material may be

combined in number of waysOne of them is to jointly use the bed rock and

water tank

Latent Heat StorageIn this energy is stored

by virtue of latent change of phase of storage medium

The phase changing material have higher thermal storage density

This type of system are more compact than sensible heat storage system

computers or electrical appliances. Thermal protection of food
