Manufacturing Today…

Overtime cultures developed many different ways of roasting and grinding the coffee bean. In order to decrease volume and increase shelf-life, manufacturers began producing instant coffee. Today, the two main instant coffee manufacturing methods are freeze drying and spray drying, with spray drying.

Coffee beans are ground up into small pieces.

Hot, soft water is rinsed over the grounds eliminating unwanted gases.

Cold water is rinsed through them to bring out the bold flavors.

Concentration is increased by putting mixture into a centrifuge, evaporating excess water before cooling the extract.

Remaining gases present a mixture that are altered yet again, the oxygen is eliminated to enhance the flavor and aroma.

To eliminate moisture from the coffee grounds, the mixture is fed through a spray dryer.(Hot air for the spray dryer is generated with an indirect fired air heater, as an indirect air heater doesn’t subject the mixture to the by-products of combustion)

After the dry particles are filtered by the cyclone, they are packaged in a low-oxygen, low-humidity canister to optimize product flavor.
