  1. 1. EXTRACTION OF OIL FROM OIL CAKE BY SOXHLET EXTRACTOR PREPARED BY Asma-Ul-Husna ID:1002059 Level-3,Term-1 Department Of Chemical Engineering, BUET A TECHNICAL PRESENTATION ON
  2. 2. OBJECTIVE OF THE EXPERIMENT To study Soxhlet extractor To determine the percentage of extracted oil from oil cake To determine the percentage of solvent (n-Hexane) recovery used for extraction
  3. 3. SOLVENT EXTRACTION Solvent extraction generally includes three steps Diffusion of the solvent through the pores of solid Diffused solvent dissolves the solute Transfer of the solution from porous solid to the main bulk of the solution When extraction is done by Soxhlet apparatus, it is known as Soxhlet extraction
  4. 4. APPLICATION OF SOXHLET EXTRACTION Coffee beans used to produce biofuel Seed extract of fenugreek contains anticancer properties Beverages Food industries use extraction for analyzing food components Oil extraction from plants
  5. 5. EXPERIEMENTAL SETUP n-Hexane vapor Liquid n-Hexane n-Hexane with oil The apparatus used in the experiment is known as Soxhlet extractor
  6. 6. EXPERIEMENTAL SETUP (contd) n- Hexane vapor Cooling water
  7. 7. PROCESS BLOCK DIAGRAM The experiment had two main parts Solvent extraction Solvent recovery
  8. 8. n-HEXANE AS A SOLVENT Low latent heat of vaporization (335 KJ/kg) Highly volatile i.e. low boiling point (690 C) High solubility of vegetable oils in hexane Chemically inert with oil components Almost negligible corrosive nature Commercial availability and low cost Proper caution should be taken while working with n- Hexane, as it is a flammable and highly toxic compound
  9. 9. RESULT AND DISCUSSIONS Percentage of oil extraction from oil cake = 11.31 %
  10. 10. RESULT AND DISCUSSIONS (contd) Percentage of solvent (n-Hexane) recovery= 65.5 %
  11. 11. RESULT ANALYSIS The given oil cake was already extracted before Some oil was attached to the wall of the apparatus Considerable amount of n-Hexane was lost due to high volatility Some n-Hexane was consumed by oil cake (residue) and thimble Use of single condenser yielded low efficiency Sufficient time was not given
  12. 12. OPERATING VARIABLES OF THE EXPERIMENT Extraction time Quantity of solvent Solvent temperature Nature of the solvent
  13. 13. CONCLUSION A basic idea about solvent extraction process was conveyed through out the experiment. Although the results attained from the experiment was of less aptitude, it can be undoubtedly concluded that the main purpose of the experiment was achieved successfully.
