Right  now  lab  protocols  are  usually  wri4en  in  text.

Example:

3

There  are  4  problems  with  text  protocols.

1.  Poor  Consistency  Each  person  wri0ng  a  protocol  phrases  things  a  bit  differently  and  focuses  on  different  content.  For  a  beginner  in  the  lab  this  can  be  confusing.  “Spin  down”  vs.  “Centrifuge”

2.  Poor  VisualizaBon  It  can  be  hard  for  a  beginner  in  a  lab  to  connect  the  text  of  a  protocol  with  clear  ac0ons  they  need  to  perform.

3.  Low  EfficiencyWri0ng  text  protocols  is  not  very  0me  efficient.  You  need  to  spend  0me  deciding  word  choice  and  what  level  of  detail  to  cover.

4.  Machine  IllegibleBecause  the  text  of  protocols  is  not  consistent  in  language  or  formaHng,  computer  programs  that  run  lab  automa0on  soJware  are  not  able  to  use  it.

4

What  if...Instead  of  this. You  had  this.

5

MAKING  THE  DREAM  REAL:  WE  GOT  THE  COMMUNITY  INVOLVED

We  brought  together  graphic  designers  and  ar0sts  from  all  over  the  NYC  metro  area  and  invited  them  to  design  BIOGLYPHICS  at  a  event  hosted  in  a  Brooklyn  community  work  space.

On  7/7/14  we  hosted  a  public  event  -‐  The  BioGlyphics  Iconathon.

This procedure allows you to insert a BioBrick part (from the IGEM distribution kit) into cells. The IGEM distrubution kit contains an array of wells that contain plasmids. These plasmids contain the DNA for the BioBrick part. This plasmid will be inserted into the cell and then the cell will be plated on a petri dish.

The  complete  IGEM  transforma0on  protocol  in  BIOGLYPHICS.

7

Why  We  Like  It.100%  consistent. Each  protocol  follows  the  same  logical  format.

Easy  to  understand  and  visualize.  Materials  and  Procedures  are  visually  defined  just  like  IKEA  instruc0ons.

Fast  &  easy  to  create.  Simple  drag  and  drop  web/android/iOS  app  interface.

Will  be  100%  machine  readable  for  lab  automaBon  so^ware.Making  a  protocol  in  this  format  will  automa0cally  build  machine  code  behind  the  scenes.

Our  Dream  is...

To  create  a  fully  featured  online  community  and  repository  of  visual  laboratory  protocols.

Imagine  a  Thingiverse.com  or  allrecipies.com  for  visual  laboratory  protocols.

Drag  and  drop  web  app  for  creaBng  a  BIOGLYPHICS  protocol.Simply  drag  and  drop  the  correct  icons  and  then  fill  in  the  details.

In  under  2  mins  you  can  build  a  complete  protocol.

10

It  works  just  like  IKEA  InstrucBons

STEP  1:  DEFINE  YOUR  MATERIALS

We  have  a  test  tube  of  Soc  Media  defined  as  1

STEP  2:  CREATE  YOUR  PROCEDUREUse  procedure  icons  and  materials  to  create  your  protocol.

We  have  an  empty  2ml  Tube  defined  as  A

We  are  pipeHng  5  microliters  of  1  into  A.

We  centrifuge  A  for  30  sec.

We  incubate  &  shake  A  for  24  hours.

11

When  you  create  a  visual  protocol...

The  code  you  see  here  is  an  early  a4empt  at  translaBng  Bioglyphics  input  into  Pr-‐Pr

The  web  app  will  automaBcally  generate  lab  automaBon  code.

BIOGLYPHICS: A 3 STAGE PROCESS OF DEVELOPMENT

12

STAGE  1Proof  of  concept  and  basic  early  prototype.  Ini0al  development  of  Bioglyphic  icons  and  explora0on  into  lab  automa0on  programming.

STAGE  2Raise  funding  and  find  dedicated  volunteers  for  the  full  development  of  the  web  applica0on  and  online  community.

STAGE  3Spread  BioGlyphics  to  other  community  labs,  teachers,  and  bio  makers  across  the  country.
