Sensors which measure linear or angular position
• Contacting: through a mechanical connection
• Non-contacting: without physical contact
Non-contacting position sensors are
• More reliable
• Offer a longer functional life due to the absence of mechanical parts and physical contact
Strong trend
• From simple angle and distance sensors towards robust, intelligent sensor systems and applications with multiple simultaneous measurement axes.
• Magnetic sensor technology shows robust growth of >10% CAGR 2013 - 2018
ams position sensors

• Electric motors are the single biggest
consumer of electricity.
• They account for about 2/3 of industrial
power consumption and about 45% of global
power consumption*
• The majority of electric motors are inefficient,
oversized or running when they don’t need to
be running.
* according to the International Energy Agency

The e-motor market is growing
• 40% from 2012 to 2017 (IHS Electronics & Media 2013)
• More than 30% of the vehicles worldwide will have an electrified
powertrain (source: Continental, 48V eco Hybrid Systems 2013)
Government regulations worldwide
• Industry to implement new efficiency classes IE1, IE2, IE3, …
(IE = International Efficiency to reduce CO2 - higher efficiency
means better motor control)
The e-motor market is changing
• From DC to BLDC (brushless) to PMSM (permanent magnet
synchronic motor) resulting in an need for electronics and therefore
for advanced position sensors

Competitive Product Positioning against Competitive ICsAS5047P with Integrated Dynamic Angle Error Compensation
For very high speed rotational shaft applications requiring precise rotary
position measurements, the AS5047P provides ultra-low latency, stray field
immunity, and high accuracy performance, while enabling reduced system
costs.
Unlike competitive rotary position sensors ICs, the AS5047P. Is immune to stray magnetic fields for improved performance and lower
system costs (no shielding required)
Has ultra-low intrinsic propagation delay (1.9us) and noise for better
accuracy
Provides +/-0.5° angle measurement accuracy over flexible mechanical
displacement
Supports very high speed rotational shaft applications (up to 28K RPM)
Requires a smaller target magnet for lower system costs (6mm diameter)
Is packaged in a low profile height TSSOP-14 (1.0mm).
Provides robust customer configurability, including zero-position location, for
end-of-line programming

Becoming increasingly important in the automotive arena
• Drivetrain of vehicles becomes partially or wholly electrified
• Electromagnetically and mechanically harsh environment
• New standards such as ISO11452-8 (immunity to magnetic
fields) and ISO26262 (functional safety)
All ams magnetic position sensors can withstand external
magnetic stray fields above the limits required by the most
demanding OEM’s.
• Measurements show that at 3000 A/m = 3,768 mT, which is a
current maximum OEM stress limit, ams does not show any
output voltage drift over the 360 degree
• No need for complicated and expensive magnetic shielding.
• Dual-pixel sensor ICs provide a means for designers to achieve
robust performance and to provide for compliance with the
most exacting standards
