SAFE DRIVING WITH INTELLIGENT DRIVING LICENCE USING INTERNET OF THINGSAbdullahi ChowdhuryFederation University [email protected]

INTERNET OF THINGSInternet of Things (IoT), which will create a large network of billions or trillions of “Things” communicating with each other[1].

SMART TRANSPORT SYSTEM

Smart Transport System (STS) will be one of the main IoT services in the near future. IoT STS can collect data from the vehicles (e.g., cars, buses, trains equipped with sensors, actuators and processing units) and traffic information exchange nodes alongside the roads and the rails[2].

INTELLIGENT DRIVING LICENCE SYSTEM

Intelligent Driving Licence System (IDLS) can store the pattern of the driving of the licence holder and can communicate with the road transport authority in case of traffic rules violations, road condition update or in emergency situations[3].

YOUNG DRIVERS DEATH STATISTICS In 2015, 22% of drivers killed were aged between 18 and 25 years, with this age group only representing around 13% of Victorian licence holders[3].

63% were killed on country roads[3].56% were killed in single vehicle crashes[3].

67% of deaths occurred on 100km/h signposted roads[3].

FACTS FOR PROBATIONARY DRIVERS (VICTORIA STATE, AUSTRALIA) When Divers get new probationary licence from

learner permit, they have 30 time more chance to get involve in an accident[4].

Road crashes are the single biggest unintentional killer of young people aged 18-25 years in Victoria[4].

Young drivers are at greatest risk of dying or being seriously injured in the first six to twelve months of probationary driving[4].

ELECTRONIC DRIVING LICENCE

In IDLS road transport authority will issue an Electronic Driving Licence that will have Global Positioning System enabled wireless sensor to communicate with STS via different sensors installed in Smart Traffic Signals. IDLS will play an important role in reducing road accidents by enforcing safe driving practice.

ELECTRONIC DRIVING LICENCE CONT..

Electronic driving licence will store the following details: Road speed limit and driving speed Will store data if driver fails to obey any

safety rules (e.g. red light camera rules) Involvement in any accident Violation of any other road safety rules

FUTURE WORK

Increase security of Electronic Driving licence (both physical and network security)

Secure connection between electronic licence and traffic management office.

Determine which departments can scan and retrieve data from electronic driving licence.
