A device that transfers electric energy from a source to a load using electronic circuits is referred to as power supply.
A typical application of a power supply is to convert utility AC voltage into regulated DC voltages required for electronic equipment.
WHAT IS POWER SUPPLY?
STEPS INVOLVED IN MAKING A POWER SUPPLY
RAGULATED DC POWER SUPPLIES
Provide accurate DC voltage, derived from AC mains. Are cheaper in nature.Provide constant voltage irrespective of load variations
BLOCK DIAGRAM
A step down transformer is used to reduce the dangerously high AC voltage to a safer level
1.TRANSFORMER
In our power supply the output of the transformer is an AC step down to 15V
Transformers waste very little power , so the power out is almost equal to the power in. So, as voltage is stepped down current is stepped up.
2.BRIDGE RACTIFIER
A bridge rectifier is an arrangement of four or more diodes in bridge circuit.Convert the AC voltage to DCWorks on the rule of full wave rectification
FLOW OF CURRENT
3.FILTERING
Filtering is technique in which a pure DC is obtainedThe output of a bridge rectifier is not pure DC and needs to be converted into pure form
A capacitive circuit is used as a filter or a smootherIt converts the pulsating DC into a pure DC or steady state DC with a little ripples
Eliminate ripples by setting DC output to a fixed voltageVoltage regulator ICs are available with fixed (typically 5, 12, and 15V) or variable output voltagesEach regulator has its own data sheet and pin configurationLM 7815 used in our power supply
