1200KV ULTRA HIGH VOLTAGE TRANSMISSION SYSTEM
SEMINAR REPORT ON
By :- Prannaya Kumar Giri Binay Prasad Giri
Indian power sector is growing at an accelerated pace . In a bid to further boost the
transmission capacity of the country, India has moved towards Ultra High voltage (UHV)
transmission level.
India has adopted 1200 KV ultra high voltage (UHV) AC system to power transfer over a
large geographical area.
To develop 1200 kV AC Transmission System and associated equipment indigenously, a
joint initiative is taken by POWERGRID, CPRI and Equipment Manufacturers to set up a
1200 kV Testing Station and an experimental line at BINA in Madhya Pradesh.

NATIONAL GRID - PRESENT
WHY WE ARE GOING TO 1200KV TRANSMISSION
Need for ultra high voltage (UHV) transmission level power over large distances
without any fault.
Economical transmission of large amount of power.
Stabilization of the power system to withstand large generation and transmission
outages.
Limitation of the number of transmission line in order to reduce environmental
impact and land use.
1200 KV NATIONAL TEST STATION Two 1000 MVA 1200/400/33 kv auto
transformers
Two 1200kv & 400kv bays
One 1200kv line single circuit (about 1.1
km long)
One 1200kv line double circuit line (about
0.8 km long)
(THE SINGLE LINE DIAGRAM OF THE TEST STATION ) The portion marked with red colour is 1200kV Test Station.

TRANSMISSION CAPACITY OF DIFFERENT LINE
BENEFIT OF 1200 kV UHV POWER TRANSMISSION Reduction in the current.
Reduction in the losses.
Reduction in volume of conductor material required.
Decrease in voltage drop & improvement of voltage regulation.
Increase in Transmission Efficiency.
Increased power handling capacity.
The no. of circuits & the land requirement reduces as transmission voltage increases.
The total line cost per MW per km decreases considerably with the increase in line voltage.

FUTURE DEMAND & IMPLEMENTATION OF 1200KV UHV AC TRANSMISSION
Reactive power management for 1200kv AC system is an important aspect which require
detail analysis for suitable static and dynamic reactive compensation .
In order to transmit bulk power over long distances that generation station to load center
1200 kv UHV is normally the most cost efficient alternative.
India now has an open field to demonstrate its prowess on building commercial 1,200kv
lines.
Establishment of a 1200kv ac test station at BINA is under progress.
