Mission Statement/Goals• Our goal in 7th grade is to ensure

that you learn the necessary reading strategies to pass your SOL!

• You will strive to do your best. Some will work on passing with a 400, some will work to pass advanced. Either way you will be pushed to your limit to ensure your success.

Diary Create a diary or journal from the perspective of the main character in your book. Diary should include

an illustrated cover and 10-12 entries.

Comic Strip Series Create a comic strip series that

includes at least four events in the book. Each section of the comic

should have 3-4 illustrations with captions.

Emails with Directory Create an email directory of all of

the contacts that your main character may communicate with.

Then construct 3-4 exchanges with at least 3 of the characters in that directory. Include images for

each contact.

Brochure Construct a travel brochure that

advertises the setting of your book. Include key attractions,

culture, food, and other interesting aspects of the place. Include

contact information and illustrations.

Scrapbook Construct a scrapbook of 10-12

mementos associated with characters and events in the story.

Write a caption describing each symbol and what it represents.

Timeline Construct a timeline of 10-12 main

events in the story or the historical events that took place

during the time period of the story. Include a date and an illustration for each event.

Plot Diagram Create a plot diagram of the

narrative elements in the book (characters, setting, initiating

event, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution) and at least

one image for each element.

Newspaper/Newsletter Construct a newspaper for your book. Include one news article about an event in your book, a

weather section, advertisements, and an editorial column. Include an illustration with captions for

each section.

Movie Advertisement Create a modern-day movie based on your book. Your advertisement

should include a title, release date, a brief summary

encouraging people to watch the movie, and main characters with

illustrations for each. Your characters should be actors who

you think would best play the roles.

Classroom Policies

• Be respectful to everyone in the room, including yourself and the teacher.

• Do your best work all the time. If you do not have time to do it right, you better have time to do it over!

• Raise your hand to get permission to get out of your seat, to speak, to borrow something or for any other reason you can think of.

Daily Agenda

• Bell Work – When you walk into English, bell work will be on the board. Take out your bell work notebooks and copy the prompt and make your corrections using the editing symbols sheet.

• Homework and Objective: Will be posted on the blackboard EVERY DAY.

• Write your HOMEWORK in your agenda immediately after bell work. I WILL INITIAL EVERYONE’S AGENDA.

• One section of your interactive notebook will be reserved for daily bell work.

• We will copy bell work every day. • One student will be drawn randomly to come up

and make corrections.• Once a week, we will have an open-note quiz on

the bell work from that week. • If you wrote it down, you’ll get a 100%! I• If you don’t write it down, you will have a very

difficult time.

• This is our primary learning tool and everything you need to know for English class and the English SOL will be in your iBook.

Crafting

• There is a table in the back of the room with crafting materials on it. These materials don’t belong to you.

• IF YOU USE THEM, PUT THEM BACK WHEN YOU’RE FINISHED.

• We do a lot of cutting, pasting, writing, drawing, graphic organizers, etc. in our iBooks. I WILL CALL YOU UP BY ROW OR SECTION.

• If you have your own materials (glue, colored pencils, markers, etc) bring your own; No need to use the classroom supply.

Homework and Classwork

• You will need to bring the following supplies daily: 3-Ring Binder, pencil, agenda.

• Interactive notebook. If you forget your iBook, it is your responsibility to get paper to write on and then put it in the notebook where it belongs.

• You will take your iBook home each night in order to study and do your nightly homework.

Special Projects

• You will also receive a menu of project choices to choose from that will be based off of one of the stories/novels you read for that 9 weeks.

• You will get an individual grade for every project/assignment, even if you are working with a partner or in a group.

Grading

• You will record the grades you receive in your notebook so you can monitor your progress.

• You will have a spelling/ vocabulary quiz every week.

• You will have a reading test every other week.

• You will have a iBook check every other week.

• You will have classwork grades in your workbooks

• You will also have your project grades.

Parent Communication

• Each of you need to have your parent fill out or review what you have filled out on the contact sheet and return to me tomorrow.

• Back to school night is Thursday, Sept. 19th from 5:30 – 7:00.

• Parent teacher conferences will be held in November and February and a notification will be in your report card to sign up for a time slot.

• I will call or email parents if you do something horrible or amazing. I am no stranger to the phone…..

Classroom Management

• If you follow my policies, and are respectful, you will be rewarded.

• If you disrupt my class or anyone in it, you will receive the proper consequences.

• Possible consequences of course are referrals; however, sometimes that is not the solution for a problem so I will get creative.

• Do not argue: use the magic words and it ends a situation rather than escalating it.

Introductions: “Two Truths and A Lie”

• Everyone will be given a whiteboard and dry erase marker.

• Quickly think of two things about yourself you would like to share and write them down.

• Add a “lie” about yourself to your list (in mixed up order so it’s not obvious).

• We will go around the room and Ms. Zayas will attempt to choose which is the lie!
