Dear Friends,

Whilst 123 million young people around the world remain unable to read or write at all, the work of the World Literacy Foundation remains exceptionally important. For the past ten years the WLF has played a crucial role in using literacy to promote positive and practical change amongst the disadvantaged around the world. Our vision has EHHQDQGUHPDLQVWRLQVSLUHDIXWXUHwhere all children can pursue quality HGXFDWLRQUHDFKWKHLUIXOOSRWHQWLDOand contribute to their community and country in a meaningful way.

7KLVUHTXLUHVHQRUPRXVHRUWnone more so than that of the many RUJDQLVDWLRQVVXSSRUWHUVDQGvolunteers who exhibit extraordinary generosity each year. Whether they GRQDWHWKHLUWLPHH[SHUWLVHPRQH\RUERRNVWKHLUFRQWULEXWLRQWRWKRVHless fortunate than themselves never ceases to inspire me. We appreciate the trust that has been placed in us to use all resources that are provided WRXVZLVHO\DQGZRUNKDUGWRHQVXUHthat we use them to their greatest impact.

The past twelve months was a steady RQHIRUXVLQWHUPVRIȴQDQFLDOJURZWKDQGVWDELOLW\:HUHPDLQDVPDOOEXWgrowing organisation. Our limited size did not stop us from reaching an

estimated 25 million people globally WKURXJKRXUSURJUDPVHYHQWVDQGmedia campaigning. We are extremely proud of the young people whose lives we have touched in the past twelve months.

A personal highlight for myself this year was attending the UNESCO conference on Community Learning &HQWUHVLQ%DQJNRN7KDLODQG7KHevent was an inspiring reminder of WKHJUHDWZRUNEHLQJGRQHE\organisations big and small to improve global literacy standards.

7KHEDFNERQHRIRXU)RXQGDWLRQLVthe spirit of collaboration within the RUJDQLVDWLRQDQGZLWKRXUSDUWQHUVsupporters and the communities in ZKLFKZHZRUN:HDUHDOOGHWHUPLQHGWRPDNHDSRVLWLYHGLHUHQFHLQWKHlives of as many illiterate people as SRVVLEOHDQGE\ZRUNLQJWRJHWKHUZHare really achieving this.

The day also serves as an opportunity for the United Nations to remind the international community of the status of literacy rates and standards.

On International Literacy Day we unite with other educators to call upon world leaders to do more to improve literacy around the globe. In September 2012 we were able to use media interviews and events to raise public awareness of the Millennium Development Goals in literacy and the Education for All goals.

“With guidance, support and seed funding from the World Literacy Foundation, we have been able to build a network of local literacy practitioners in Colombia. This network is allowing all literacy and education focused organisations in Colombia to share ideas and better collaborate with one another.

We quickly found a large community of people who were providing literacy focused programs but with limited communication with each other. The literacy network has addressed this problem. We operate in association with the University, which also provides access to researchers and assessment tools. We appreciate the support of the WLF and their willingness to invest in this local project.”

Juan Sebastian is a 10-year-old boy living in the

outskirts of Manizales, a city in central Colombia.

Some years ago a local gang murdered his father.

He now lives with his mother, grandmother and

three brothers and sisters.

All of the schools around Juan Sebastian’s home

make it compulsory for all students to wear a

VFKRROXQLIRUPΖI\RXFDQȇWDRUGDVFKRROuniform then you are not allowed to attend

school. Unfortunately for Juan Sebastian, his

mother barely has enough money to feed their

family. This means that he is unable to attend

school regularly, and has never learnt to read

and write.

In 2012 the World Literacy Foundation became

aware of Juan Sebastian’s situation and invited

him to attend the Manizales Learn to Read

Centre. The afternoon program provides children

like Juan Sebastian with special attention and

assistance to teach them the basics of literacy

and education. He started visiting the program

Juan Sebastian is still attending the Centre after

school and has made many friends there, which

is one of his favourite parts of program. When he

grows up he wants to become a singer or a

veterinarian to help all the sick animals in his

village.

He knows that if he can continue to learn then he

will have many new opportunities later on in his

life.

“I would like to get away from the crime and

poverty in my village,” he says. “I know if I can

read and write, I can go on to high school.”
