Working to a Brief
This week
We are going to look at client briefs, before beginning work on the last theory assignment for FMP.
What is a brief?
How do we get briefs?
Put out to Tender against competition
Commissioned directly by a client
Different types of brief
Formal Informal
What do we think a formal brief is?
• Written document
• Specific & clear information, such as goals, objectives, timeframes
• Targeted at specific departments & people
• Can contain legal information
Formal briefs are more contractual
• They are a legal, signed agreement with clear aims and objectives
• They are legally binding; both parties have agreed to do and deliver certain things (a trade; money for services)
• Sometimes these involve NDA’s
What do we think a informal brief is?
• A verbal agreement between the client and the video producer
• Goals, deadlines and content are agreed through talking to the client
• More flexible and collaborative
• Often more low budget in nature
• Often between the producer & the client, rather than inter-departmental.
Co-operation
Sometimes you’ll be working with another third party….
Client
Video producer
Marketing company

Your vision for the project

Negotiating: what constraints do you face?
Negotiating: what opportunities do you have?
