UTILIZATION OF WIND ENERGY FOR POWER GENERATION

Windmill (Wind turbine Generator)

Page 2: Wind Turbine

OBJECTIVE Our objective is to utilize wind energy

(non-conventional energy resource) for the generation of electricity.

A small-scale windmill (wind turbine) can generate electricity if coupled with a generator and exposed to fast blowing winds.

Page 3: Wind Turbine

WIND POWER It deals with the conversion of wind

energy into an-other usable form of energy such as electrical energy, mechanical energy (for pumping water, sailing ships, feeding water to crops) etc.

Page 4: Wind Turbine

WIND-MILL Windmill is a simple dynamic machine

used directly to convert kinetic energy from fast blowing winds to rotational energy (mainly to turn shaft or any other assembly).

As the wind strikesthe blades, it causes

the blades torotate …

PRINCIPLE OF WINDMILL

When the wind strikesblades of windmill,

kinetic energy of windis utilized by bladesand blades rotate.

Kinetic Energy from Winds

Since blades aredirectly connected to

shaft, so bladesrotate the shaft.

Mechanical Energy from

Shaft

Rotating shaft isconnected to

electricgenerator, whichin turn rotates asthe shaft does.

ESTIMATED COSTS AND

PROPOSED MATERIALS Blades

Proposed material for blades is Aluminum, PVC plastic (Aluminum foil’s price is Rs. 300 per kg, while PVC’s is 500 per kg) or Cedar wood.

Hub Proposed material is ‘Steel’ or Wood (~ Rs.

200). Shaft

Proposed material is ‘PVC’ (~ Rs. 150). Main Body

Proposed material is ‘Aluminum sheets’ or ‘Wooden case’ (~ Rs. 500).

ESTIMATED COSTS AND

PROPOSED MATERIALS Tail

PVC is the most suitable material (~ Rs. 150).

Tower and BasePVC, Steel or Wood may be used here (Rs.

400). Electric motor (as generator)

DC motor, with about 1000 rpm and 12 to 18 volts (~ Rs. 400).

Bulb and Wires2 copper wires and 1 filament bulb (LEDs

are also under consideration) (~Rs. 50). Total cost ranges from Rs. 2000 to 2500.

SPECIFICATIONS & EXPECTATIONS We may use 3 or 4 blades for our

windmill design (of about 18’’ to 24’’ length).

We shall use dc motor as generator rated against 12 to 18 VDC.

We hope to generate from 2 V to 5 V of potential from electric generator.

We hope to get minimum of 100 mA of current from generator.

If we wouldn’t be able to achieve expected results, we may increase the size of blades or rating of generator.

ADVANTAGES OF

WINDMILL Wind Energy (fuel for windmill

generator) is renewable, so it will never run out.

Windmill doesn’t produce any poisonous gases, smoke, fumes, etc. as it doesn’t involve any burning process. So, it’s clean.

It’s a very cheap way to generate electricity from.

Windmills have very low maintenance costs as compared to those of other power generation plants.

Page 12: Wind Turbine

LIMITATIONS OF

WINDMILLS Windmills cause a lot of noise, so a

windmill farm may become bothersome for people living nearby.

Installation costs for windmills are very high, and its designing requires very high technical skill and knowledge.

Since wind is unpredictable, so we may not get electricity all the time.

Efficiencies for these wind turbines are very low.
