The situation:

After passing her teaching placement, a student comesto you because she’s feeling bad about something.

In the last period of her placement, she had a pupilwho just kept interrupting her lesson and she feltincapable of stopping him.

The situation continued:

The reason why the student is feeling bad, is becauseshe started shouting at the interrupting pupil and shealmost threw an eraser at him.

The student was unable to stop the pupil from actingout, which got her so angry that she couldn’t controlherself.

Empathetic Listening

Empathetically listening to someone is:

• Listening while not holding on to your own frame ofreference.

• Clear your mind and be in the present with them.

• Suspend all judgment and just feel with the other person.
