What is Connected Learning?

Learning has always been about connections…

Books connect authors and readers…

Classrooms connect teachers and students…

But Connected Learning takes these connections a little step further….

Social media has broken down old rules, hierarchies and barriers in terms of how groups of learners connect…

The teacher once stood at the front of the group

Now, through technology, people can connect together as both teachers and learners at the same time (Dron & Anderson, 2014, p.xi)

Technology links learning which takes place

At home,

and in school.

amongst peers,

(Ito et al., 2013; Dron & Anderson, 2014; Garcia, 2013).

in the community,

Because it combines student’s academic and non-academic learning, using connected Learning in schools represents a “bold re-envisioning of what education can look like.”

(Garcia, 2013, p. 4)

Connected Learning is not just for our students. Imagine…

This as your professional network

Or this.

I know where I’d learn more… Curran and Wetherbee (2014)

Teachers who are connected learners themselves are learning the skills to become connected educators too.

 Curran and Wetherbee, 2014, p.24

Ito et al. (2014define Connected Learning as a new approach to education which is

• Socially embedded

• interest-driven

• oriented towards educational, economic or political opportunity
