To be sustainable, it means to reduce the use of physical resources including water and energy, encourage recycling, increase the use of renewable products, encourage redesign of production processes and products to eliminate the production of toxic materials and to protect and restore natural habitats and environments valued for their biodiversity or beauty.

Renewable products are not only sustainable but also very cost efficient, which has been drawing a large quantity of consumers in. For example, renewable batteries might be more expensive up front, but they last much longer than regular ones, which is a lot more cost effective in the future. This is the case with a lot of renewable or reusable products and is why consumers have been attracted to products like these.

It is important to consider sustainability in a design process because you are then able to see what ways you can make your design better for the environment. Sustainable items and products are becoming more and more popular because of how the are very cost efficient, so you need to consider if consumers are going to want sustainable products.

SOLUTION 1

Fusion Designs has decided to use solar panels in our buildings because it allows our buildings to use solar energy which is a lot more accessible than burning fossil fuels. After a while, we will run out of coal to burn, which will have a dramatic effect on companies and consumers. Whereas, with solar panels there is an endless supply of sun, meaning that there will never be any major decreases in the energy. Fusion Designs has decided that all apartments and houses have solar panels on them so that as a community, everyone will be more environmentally friendly and cautious of the environment.

SOLUTION 2

When designing the buildings for Wentworth Point, Fusion Designs decided to dramatically increase the size and use of windows for a more modern approach and to more importantly, give us accessibility to use natural lighting. During the daytime, we will aim towards using only the light outside and at night time, using electricity and energy gathered from the solar panels. This will ensure that we aren’t wasting any electricity, save the community of Wentworth Point money and help the environment.

SOLUTION 3

At the Wentworth Discovery Centre, there is a large rainwater tank on the outside of the building. This rainwater tank is made out of pressed, recycled metal. Fusion Designs decided that using a recycled metal was better for the environment and cheaper than buying a whole heap of metal. This rainwater tank collects all rainfall and through the use of the numerous underground pipes, provides water for all of the buildings, services and facilities in Wentworth Point.
