INTRODUCTION
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a transmission technology for delivery of voice communications over IP networks.
Internet telephone call are conversion of the analog voice signal to digital format and compression/translation of the signal into Internet protocol packets.
VoIP systems employ session control protocols to control the set-up and tear-down of calls as well as audio codecs.
With VoIP, we can make a call from anywhere we have broadband connectivity.

ATA( Analog Telephone Adaptor)
ATA allows us to connect a standard phone to our computer or our Internet connection for use with VoIP. The ATA is an analog-to-digital converter. It takes the analog signal from our traditional phone and converts it into digital data for transmission over the Internet.
To connect through ATA, plug the cable from our phone that would normally go in the wall socket into the ATA, and we're ready to make VoIP calls.

IP Phones
These specialized phones look just like normal phones with a handset, cradle and buttons. But instead of having the standard RJ-11 phone connectors, IP phones have an RJ-45 Ethernet connector. These phones allow VoIP calls without the use of a computer. Instead they connect directly to the IP network.
In order to connect to the PSTN they usually require service from a VoIP service provider.

Computer-to-computer
This is certainly the easiest way to use VoIP. We don't even have to pay for long-distance calls. There are several companies offering free or very low-cost software that we can use for this type of VoIP.
We need the software, hardware and an Internet connection, preferably a fast one that would get through a cable or DSL modem.
Except for the normal monthly ISP fee, there is usually no charge for computer-to-computer calls.
