An action verb is transitive if the receiver (noun or pronoun) of the action is named in the sentence. The receiver of the action is called the object of the verb.

El verbo transitivo es aquél que necesita tener un objeto directo para que la oración pueda tener sentido total.

El verbo transitivo es aquél que necesita tener un objeto directo para que la oración pueda tener sentido total. Podemos identificar el CD a partir de los siguientes criterios preguntando al verbo :

“¿qué?” o “¿a quién?

In these sentences, something is being done to an object

An action verb is intransitive if there is no receiver of the action named in the sentence. An intransitive verb does not have an object.

Verbos intransitivos son aquellos verbos que no requieren de objeto directo para que la oración tenga sentido completo.

In these sentences, nothing receives the action of the verbs sleep and complain

• She sings her favorite song. (favorite song receives the action of sing = transitive)

• She sings every day. (there is no object = intransitive)

• We study grammar. (grammar receives the action of study = transitive)

• We study hard. (there is no object = intransitive)
