• Has two to four years of exempt-level (professional) generalist experience.
• Has not had progressive HR work experience by virtue of career length.

Current Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for the PHR, SPHR or GPHR exam you must have
at least two years of exempt-level (professional) HR experience

Exam Application Steps
Register for your exam online at www.hrci.org in three simple steps
1. Log on to www.hrci.org. Create an online profile to
obtain your User ID number.
2. Fill out the application form and submit payment.
3. Schedule your appointment after receiving notification that
you are eligible to take the exam.

How to Prepare for the Exam/ Resources Available
At this point, you may be wondering about the exam preparation tools available. Should you decide to take the certification exam, we have tools that can help you:
1. Use the Body of Knowledge– Familiarize yourself with the body of knowledge– Can be found on www.hrci.org and in the handbook
2. Official Certification Handbooks & Guides– The HR Certification Institute downloadable certification handbooks
for each of its exam levels– In addition, you can purchase Official Guides for each level of
exam from the SHRM Store as well as from major book stores
3. Online Assessment Exams – Developed using actual retired exam questions– Assess your level of HR knowledge and experience– Expose you to type of questions seen during exam
4. “Test your knowledge” quizzes on www.hrci.org, under “Certifications” tab– Free ten-question quiz with answers and rationale

Additional Resources: 1. SHRM Learning System® & SHRM Global Learning System®
2. Local SHRM Chapters– Contact your local SHRM Chapters. They often form study
groups or classes to help members prepare for the certification exams.
3. College/ university sponsored courses – Visit www.shrm.org for more information.
4. Certification preparation courses – Visit www.shrm.org for SHRM Certification Preparation courses or search online for other providers of certification preparation courses.
5. Social Networking Groups– Check out SHRM Connect, LinkedIn and Face Book. Other
SHRM members have formed groups online. Approach them to form study groups or study tips. Use search terms such as “HR Certification Institute.”

Financial Assistance Available
During these tough economic times, every dollar counts. You can count on HR certification as a worthy investment. Here are some financial assistance programs available for your certification pursuits:
1. Your Employer – Many organizations reimburse the HR certification exam fees through employee assistance or professional development programs.
2. SHRM Foundation – 80 certification scholarships (worth US$750 each) are available for SHRM members. Applications accepted: Apr. 1 to July 15, 2010
3. Local SHRM Chapters – Many local SHRM chapters offer certification scholarships as well. Check with the chapter in your area for more details.
