Computer and smartphone applications for supporting
classroom teaching and fostering independent learning
Do you do this?
Smartphones can be distracting …
… but they can also be a resource
Smartphones are a big part of students’
lives
So how can we use this to assist language
learning
What is e-learning? …
…anything that has students communicating through any electronic
medium ….
… usually computers etc
What’s good about computers?
• student autonomy - they can study independently out of class
• at their own pace• it engages student’ interests• students can follow their own interests• real (authentic) English
Problems?• teacher has less control (because students
have more)• teacher may not be able to solve technical
problems• authentic English is difficult• how to link content to syllabus?• need access to computers or smartphones
• http://lyricstraining.com• http://lingorank.com/• voice to text• http://www.real-english.com/• www.elllo.org/• moodle (https://www.gnomio.com/)
Learning management systems
• keeps all student work and all materials in one place
• can be run by the institution - or by the teacher
• students can share work• students can see grading• students can see the whole course at a
glance
