Session 2Agenda- Physiology – Circulatory System
High Frequency
CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
CirculationYour body resembles
a large roadmap, There are routes or
“arteries” that take you to the “heart” of the city.
.
What is circulatory SystemThe circulatory system carries blood and dissolved
substances to and from different places in the body.
The Heart has the job of pumping these things around
the body
The Heart pumps blood and substances around the
body in tubes called blood vessels
The Heart and blood vessels together make up the
Circulatory System
3 Major Parts of the Circulatory system
Heart – pumps or pushes blood through body
Blood Vessels - routes blood travels
Blood – carries important “ *stuff ” through body
* Stuff – includes oxygen, food, & waste
Heart PhysiologyThe heart is the muscular organ of the circulatory
system that constantly pumps blood throughout
the body.
Approximately the size of a clenched fist.
The heart is composed of cardiac muscle
tissue that is very strong and able to contract and
relax rhythmically throughout a person's lifetime.
Heart –Right side pumps
deoxygenated blood.Left side pumps
oxygenated blood.
Blood volume – 4-5 litres- female5-6 litres – male
Left
Lungs
Body cells
the right side of the
system
deals with
deoxygenated
blood.
the left side of the
system
deals with
oxygenated
blood.
The ARTERY
thick muscle and elastic
fibres
Arteries carry blood away from the heart.
the thick muscle can contract
to push the blood along.
The VEIN
Veins carry blood towards the heart.
thin muscle and elastic fibres
body muscles surround the veins so that when they contract to move the body, they also squeeze the veins and push the blood along the vessel.
The CAPILLARY
Capillaries link Arteries with Veins
the wall of a capillaryis only one cell thick
The exchange of materials between the blood and the body can only occur through capillaries.
Your Blood is made of
Red Blood Cells
They carry oxygen to all parts of the body
A straw-coloured liquid that carries the cells and the platelets which help blood clot.
• carbon dioxide
• glucose
• amino acids
• proteins
• minerals
• vitamins
• hormones
• waste materials like urea.
It also contains useful things like;
PlasmaLiquid part of blood
White Blood CellsFight and kill germs that may enter your bloodstream
PlateletsForm “scabs” when you cut yourself
Helps stop the bleeding
HIGH FREQUENCY
1906 1918 2008
High frequency current moves
backward and forward at high speed.
Works on alternating or oscillating
current.
Frequency measured at 100 000-
250 000 hertz.
Used for both beauty and hair
treatments.
High frequency current is also called
“Tesla current” (pioneer Nikola Tesla).
Types of High Frequency
High voltage used for beauty treatments.
Lower voltage used by the Dermatologist for Epiliation.
The Machine….
ElectrodesElectrodes are made up of glasses.
It has metal cap, which is a push fit into
electrode.
Electrodes are available in different sizes and
shapes.
Types of ElectrodesMushroomSpot knobSaturatorNeck shapeComb shape
Electrodes- ColorElectrodes contains gases:
Neon – Orange
Argon – Violet
Mercury - blue
Direct High FrequencyThe electrode is placed directly on the skin
The therapist holds electrode in contact with the
treatment area and gently moves it over the skin.
The electrode discharges its high frequency
energy directly into the skin at the point of
contact.
There are 2 Ways of using direct High Frequency
This method uses a
glass electrode, which
is moved slowly over
the skin; it is known as
Effluvation
SPARKING
FORMATION OF OZONE-
When the high frequency current is passed
through oxygen, it produces ozone.
This occurs between the electrode and the skin
and more intensely when the electrode is lifted
very slightly off the face to ‘spark’ pustules.
Indication GreasyAcne prone skin Oily CombinationDry skin
Benefits/ Effects :Warms the skin’s tissue
Stimulating effect of nerves
Vasodilatation resulting in erythema
Increases the blood flow
Improves metabolism
Increases glandular ( sebaceous glands) activity
Generates the ozone which has a germicidal action
Drying effect
PRODUCTTalc
Medicated powder
Boric powder
Ozone cream
Duration – 6 to 8 min.
Indirect High FrequencyWhen the current is switched on, it flows
through the saturator and charges the
client, the therapist massages the client’s
face and the current discharges from the
face to the massaging fingers.
The therapist is a part of the circuit.
Indication: Dry, dehydrated skin
Poor circulation
Tired skin
Relaxes tense muscles
Mature skin
Effects :Warmth is produced in the superficial tissues
Improves circulation
Improving metabolic activity.
Mild and slow massage has a sedative effect.
Thus relaxing tense tissues.
Desquamation
PRODUCTCream – Soothing and relaxing effect
Duration – 6 to 8 min.
CONTRAINDICATION Acne roseacea
Any cuts and abrasions
Headache or migraine
Vascular condition
Hyper sensitive skin
Excessive metal filling
Hairy client
Skin diseases and disorders
Pregnancy
Lack of tactile sensation
Systemic Edema
PRECAUTIONRemove jewellery and metal.
Ensure that the client does not touch the metal.
Warn the client about the machine’s noise.
Always keep the electrode in contact with the skin.
Do not spark more than quarter inch away from the skin
surface, as this is destructive to tissue.
The saturator must be held by the client tightly.
Put talc on the client’s hand before placing the electrode.
Always keep one hand in the client’s and keep it moving,
while the other hand intensifies the current.
DANGERSThe main danger is shock –
By touching faulty apparatus
Using gel or water based product
Touching metal
Lifting the electrode off the skin during treatment
Placing the electrode on the skin with high intensity
Sparking from a great distance and a long duration.
