A description of urban characteristics using Manchester as a case study. The slides concentrate on three urban zones and their characteristics, these are the inner city, the suburban zone and the rural/urban fringe.

• Ethnicity typically higher e.g. 14.9% of population of Moss side is black Caribbean
• Wealth tends to be lower as many people are economically inactive e.g. Ancoats has 12% unemployment
• Employment tends to be mainly unskilled or unemployed e.g. 25% of Ancoats in low-skilled jobs or unemployed

• 19th century high density terraced housing• 1960s high rise blocks• High amount of ethnic minorities• High proportion of young people• Poorest sections of society live here• Wealthy people live in redeveloped areas• Many students and young professionals• Close to city centre so access to shops and services

• Ethnicity is typically lower e.g. Didsbury is 87% white
• Wealth tends to increase e,g,Burnage has 8.4% unemployment
• Employment tends to be in higher manegerial e.g. 25% of Didsbury population in this group

• 20th century detached and semi detached housing
• Council housing especially closer to city centre• Many properties have gardens• Mostly families with children• Many employed in tertiary industries• Some skilled manual workers• Local shopping malls and good transport links
Rural/urban fringe
• Ethnicity usually lowest e.g. Only 2% of Northendon is Asian
• Wealth tends to be the highest e.g. Chorlton has low unemployment at 4.4%
• Most tend to work in tertiary occupations e.g.28% of Chorlton in lower managerial or professional jobs
