1) Good practice in research data management

• This course is aimed at all postgraduate researchers who are interested in finding out how to manage their research data effectively and efficiently during their research projects.

• The course explores key data management topics (including day-to-day data management, back-up and security, metadata and documentation, data sharing and preservation, and data management planning) based on the MANTRA course.

• It includes presented content, group discussions and exercises, and is delivered by means of a participative seminar where you will be encouraged to contribute and ask questions. You will also have a chance to work on a simple data management plan for your own research project.

2) Managing your research data: why is it important and what should you do?• This workshop is aimed at all research staff and post graduate research

students. It will shed light on the following questions:• What is research data management? Why is it important?• What are the funder and University requirements from researchers?• What is a data management plan? Why is it important to have one?• What is DMPonline?• Where could you store your sensitive data securely?• How could you make your data available openly? What are the options?• What are the services and tools available to you at the University to help

manage your research data effectively and efficiently?

3) Creating a data management plan for your grant application• This is a short course open to all research staff

(including postgraduate researchers) who are interested in finding out about data management plans and creating a data plan for their grant application or projects.

• If you have five (minimum) to eight (maximum) people who want to learn more about creating a data management plan for a particular funder, we can run a session especially for you.

4) Working with personal & sensitive research data

• Researchers today are pressured to share their research data and make it accessible to other researchers. But what if you have collected sensitive or confidential data?

• For many researchers, the sensitivity of research data is one of the main barriers to data sharing. Fear of violating ethical or legal obligations, lack of knowledge about disclosure control and the time required to anonymise data to a suitable standard often prevent valuable datasets from seeing the light of day

• In this course, we introduce how to collect, share, store, and protect the sensitive data you may encounter as part of your work.

5) Handling data using SPSS

• The aim of this half-day course is to show you how the facilities provided by SPSS can help with the management of your research data and to suggest some ways of keeping a record of your data work and getting your data out of SPSS, whether for long-term preservation or for further analysis in other software.

• The course is open to all postgraduate research students who are interested to learn how to use SPSS to handle their data.

• (Also data-related courses in ArcGIS, Q-GIS, Nvivo)

• It has certainly got the research team thinking a lot about data management issues and how to further expand awareness amongst our wider academic staff!

• On behalf of the Doctoral Society and all attendees, I’d like to thank you for running the session yesterday. I have received excellent feedback from the students

• It was a great help!• it really was

enlightening• incredibly useful• Excellent• I really enjoyed it• Many thanks for this

very useful workshop
