Reading Strategies

• Skimming and ScanningSkimming and scanning are reading strategies that can assist a reader in getting specific information from the text. Skimming is a reading technique that is used to get a quick “gist” of a section or chapter. Scanning is a reading technique that is reading quickly to locate specific information.

• Detailed reading Some subjects such as law subjects and literature, forexample, require a very detailed understanding fromthe student. This kind of reading is always more timeconsuming, but can be combined with skimming andscanning for greater efficiency. If it is a photocopy oryour own book, take full advantage by underlining orhighlighting and using the margins for your owncomments or questions.

• Revision readingThis involves reading rapidly through material withwhich you are already familiar, in order to confirmknowledge and understanding. Maybe summarise mainpoints on to small system cards (these can be bought atany newsagent's and then be carried around).
