• 哪边？ nǎ biān ？ for asking questions about the position of something, meaning “Which side”?

More Position Words• 里边 lǐ biān ： inside • 外面 wài miàn ： outside

边 and 面 are identical and can be used interchangeably for above direction and position words.

Exceptions of three fixed pattern• 旁边 páng biān ： side• 中间 zhōng jiān ： middle• 对面 duì miàn ： opposite

Use of Position Words

Describe the person sitting around you in the class using position words of 前后左右

• 我的左面是 _____• _____ 在我的左面。• 我的左边有 __ (number) 个人。

The Usage of Position Words• Chinese positions words are nouns. They can function as

different components in a sentence:

• As a subject: 外面有很多人。There are many people outside.

• As an object: 很多人在外面。Many people are outside.

• As an attributive: 外面的人都是我的朋友。People outside are all my friends.

• As an adverbial (with 在 ): 我的朋友在外面等我呢。My friends are waiting for me outside.

Position words modified by a Noun

When position words are modified by other nouns, “ 的” can be omitted. • 厨房 ( 的 ) 左边 to the left of the kitchen• 卧室 ( 的 ) 里面 in the bedroom• 客厅 ( 的 ) 前边 in front of the living room

Position words modified by a Noun“Noun+Position Words” phrase can function as a subject, an object or an adverbial modifier (combined with the preposition 在） in a sentence:

• As a subject:

厨房左边有一间客厅。There is a living room to the left of the kitchen.

厨房左边是一间客厅。To the left of the kitchen is a living room.

• As an object:

客厅在厨房左边。The living room is to the left of the kitchen.

• As an adverbial:

我在厨房里 ( 边 ) 做饭。I cook in the kitchen.

Position words modified by a Noun

When a noun modifies a position word, the 边 or 面 that follows 里 or 上 can be omitted:

卧室 ( 的 ) 里 ( 面 ) 卧室里有一个壁橱。There is a closet in the bedroom.

厨房 ( 的 ) 里 ( 边 ) 我正在厨房里做饭呢。I am cooking in the kitchen.

书桌 ( 的 ) 上 ( 面 ) 我的计算机 jì suàn jī 在书桌 shū zhuō 上。

My computer is on the desk.

Use of position words modified by other nouns

• 茶几下面有书。 There are some books under the tea table.• 书在茶几下面。 The books are under the tea table. • 茶几下面是书。 Under the tea table are some books.

茶几 chá jī: tea table书 shū: book

Use positions words to describe where the two books are located in each picture:

• 茶几 chá jī: tea table• 椅子 yǐ zi: chair

• 两把椅子 liǎng bǎ yǐ zi

• 壁橱 bì chú: closet• 书 shū: book

• 两本书 liǎng běn shū

Position words modifying Nouns• 左边的厨房 the kitchen on left side• 里面的房间 the inner room• 前边的客厅 the living room in the front• 对面的壁橱 the closet on the opposite side

的 CANNOT be omitted

VS.• 厨房 ( 的 ) 左边 to the left of the kitchen• 卧室 ( 的 ) 里 ( 面 ) in the bedroom• 客厅 ( 的 ) 前边 in front of the living room

“Position Word+ 的 +Noun” phrase can function as a subject or an object in a sentence:

• As a subject:

左边的房间是我的卧室。The left room is my bedroom.

• As an object:

我很喜欢外面的院子 yuàn zi 。I like the yard outside very much.

Again, this phrase can also function as a subject, an object or an adverbial in a sentence:

As a subject: 房间里 ( 面 ) 的壁橱很大。The closet inside the room is very big.

As an object: 我喜欢客厅旁边的餐厅。I like the dinning room next to the living room.

As an adverbial: 她在阳台外面的院子里看书呢。She is reading is the yard outside of the balcony.
