What is TV Drama? TV Drama is a select group of television programmes, in
which certain situations and plots within programmes are overly exaggerated, yet relatable.
The exaggeration of certain events within a programmes is taken place, in order to satisfy the audiences sense of entertainment.
There are a variety of sub-categories which lie under TV Drama, with such examples being: Soap Dramas, Crime-Drama as well as Comedy-Drama.
Teen Drama Teen Drama is aimed specifically at teenagers. Due to
this, programmes have to either include characters of a similar age, or settings of a familiar atmosphere e.g. School. The programme may also have to include aspects to which the audience may be interested in such as sport, supernatural occurrences.
Such examples of programmes of this particular genre would be The Inbetweeners, or Waterloo Road.
Soap Drama Soap Drama’s are television programmes, that revolve
around the daily lives of multiple characters. The relatable characters, and normal surroundings implement a sense of normality and familiarity into the genre.
One example of this range of programmes is Coronation Street.
Costume Drama A Costume Drama is typically set in a specific period of
time in history. Therefore, the cast of a show would have to wear clothes, and use props, and perhaps speak in a peculiar manner to match the characteristics of the specific time period.
Downton Abbey, set in the early 1900’s is one famous example of a costume drama.
Hospital Drama Coincidentally, hospital dramas are typically set within a
hospital. Hospital drama’s consist of familiar, but limited settings, similar to Teen Drama’s. main examples of this category would be House, or Casualty.
