Maintaining peace through a dynamic post-conflict reconstruction process is an area of study where development can have tremendous impact. The transition to peace, reconciliation and rebuilding pose several challenges for countries recovering from years and sometimes decades of violent conflict. Regaining economic strength, decreasing unemployment levels, increasing literacy, improving public services, and restoring infrastructure are all necessary for the fight against poverty. - See more at: http://payson.tulane.edu/summerinst/gender-leadership-post-conflict-environments Monrovia, LIBERIA: Sustainable Tourism & Development June 9 - 20, 2014 Instructor: Dauphine Sloan Tourism has long been hailed as a sound source of economic growth, job creation, and foreign currency earner for developing countries. Tourism and travel, including related supply chains, contribute around 13% of GDP and close to 12% of national employment, in Kenya and Tanzania[1], the superstars of African safaris. In West Africa, more recent tourist destinations such as Ghana and Sierra Leone generate more modest results but still succeed in delivering about half as much in production and jobs as these East African tourism powerhouses. Nearby, on the West African coast, with its attractive surf and lagoons at Robertsport and Piso Lake in the shade of Grand Cape Mount, its rain forest and wildlife in Sapo National Park, Liberia’s nascent tourism industry could in turn provide a way to diversify and enrich the country’s economy, while striving to make it humanly and environmentally sustainable. - See more at: http://payson.tulane.edu/summerinst/sustainable-tourism-and-development
