  4. 4. What is Treaty Education? In the fall of 2008, the provincial governmentof Saskatchewan announced mandatory treatyeducation for all K-12 students. It is designed to walk students through areflective process of learning about the treatyrelationship between the Canadiangovernment and the First Nations.
  5. 5. What is Treaty Education? It goes well beyond teaching the facts of thetreaties and instead aims to build greaterharmony in Saskatchewan by improving theunderstanding of the treaties(Office of the Treaty Commissioner, 2008, Preface). It is built upon the belief that understandingthe treaties is necessary for buildingcontemporary relationships between FirstNations and non-First Nations peoples.

  7. 7. Indian Residential School Apology11 June 2008The burden of this experience has been on your shoulders for far too long. The burden is properly ours as a Government, and asa country. There is no place in Canada for the attitudes that inspired the Indian Residential Schools system to ever prevail again. You have been working onrecovering from this experience for a long time and in a very real sense, we are now joining you on this journey. TheGovernment of Canada sincerely apologizes and asks the forgiveness of the Aboriginal peoples of this country for failing them so profoundlymoving towards healing, reconciliation and resolution of the sad legacy of Indian Residential Schools a new beginning and an opportunity to move forward together in partnershipforging a new relationship between Aboriginal peoples and other Canadians, a relationship based on the knowledge of our sharedhistory, a respect for each other and a desire to move forward together with a renewed understanding that strong families,strong communities and vibrant cultures and traditions will contribute to a stronger Canada for all of us.
