This workshop will offer some practical tips as to how parents and helpers can support and encourage their child’s reading at home.

Learning a language is more about the journey and the process than the end result. A positive environment where our children can develop and make mistakes will benefit their English skills in the long term.

• Chinese is a mono-syllabic language - the focus is on mastering the tones, which define the meaning. English is more focused on the sounds. Letters can have more than one sound, and students need to understand the difference in order to progress.

• Phonics ( 語音 ) can help this process, as 87% of English words have a regular spelling/sound pattern.

• The 26 letters of the English alphabet make 44 different sounds.

When your child reads, don’t just comment on their mistakes. It’s very discouraging! Children learn to read through subtle but unlimited encouragement and reinforcement. 當你的孩子閱讀時，不要找出他們的錯處，這樣會令他們氣餒的！孩子能否養成閱讀習慣，有賴家長不斷的鼓勵和增強。
