授人以魚 , 不如授之以漁。Give someone a fish and feed them for a day; teach someone how to fish and feed them forever!

This workshop will offer some practical tips as to how parents and helpers can support and encourage their child’s reading at home.

Learning a language is more about the journey and the process than the end result. A positive environment where our children can develop and make mistakes will benefit their English skills in the long term.

The Importance of Phonics拼音的重要性

• Chinese is a mono-syllabic language - the focus is on mastering the tones, which define the meaning. English is more focused on the sounds. Letters can have more than one sound, and students need to understand the difference in order to progress.

• Phonics ( 語音 ) can help this process, as 87% of English words have a regular spelling/sound pattern.

• The 26 letters of the English alphabet make 44 different sounds.

Page 15: Tom's TEFL - Hong Kong Parent's Phonics Workshop

The Importance of Phonics拼音的重要性

An understanding of phonics will help children...

1. To recognise differences in sounds.2. To recognise the relationships between letters

(or combinations of letters) and their sounds3. To work out the pronunciation of most new

words4. To develop their confidence and proficiency in

reading and reading aloud.5. To improve spelling and extend

their vocabulary.

When your child reads, don’t just comment on their mistakes. It’s very discouraging! Children learn to read through subtle but unlimited encouragement and reinforcement. 當你的孩子閱讀時, 不要找出他們的錯處,這樣會令他們氣餒的!孩子能否養成閱讀習慣,有賴家長不斷的鼓勵和增強。

Reading aloud and talking about what we’re reading sharpens children’s brains and helps them develop their ability to concentrate at length, to solve problems and to express themselves more clearly. 朗讀和與孩子一起談論讀物的內容能訓練他們的腦筋,幫助他們發展活力、解難能力及表達能力。

Read anytime and anywhere. But also have a routine – same place, same time, same stuffed animals, same book! 隨時隨地閱讀,但應培養習慣 --- 同一地點 --- 同一時間 --- 同一毛公仔 -- 同一書本。

Aim to make reading fabulous and fun. 讓他們從中找出閱讀的奧妙與樂趣!
