Causes of the Depression Stock market crash on Black Tuesday, 1929
Closure of the banks
High unemployment rates (As high as 20%- one out of every five people were jobless).
The dust bowl in the early 1930s, for it caused a shortage of agricultural produce, as well as making life difficult in
the south.
Herbert Hoover’s granting of false hope to the American people.
Effects
People frantically retrieving their money from the banks, but the banks did not have all the people’s money, called the Bank Run.
Large amounts of deflation due to unemployment; the less people had money, so the worth of every dollar increased dramatically.
Increased suicides due to depression.
Increased national hunger due to job loss.
National loss of jobs.
Decrease in commerce and overall welfare.
The New Deal
President Franklin Roosevelt created the New Deal to improve the economy during the Great Depression.
Series of programs and experiments to restore prosperity to America
Stop people from withdrawing money from the shaky banks for four days
Making it legal for Americans to buy beer
Laborers are able to bargain for higher wages and better working conditions
The New Deal brought the Government directly in economic affairs
Global Significance
The global economy suffered along with America’s, for America was a very important participant in the commerce of the world at the time.
The Great Depression’s timing varied across the world, but most started around 1930 and lasted until the late 1930s/early 1940s.
