The Future of Community-Based Services and

Education

Key Considerations in Anticipated ChangesGrowth of older populationTechnology and Education

As baby boomers continue to age the need for community based services and programs will need to increase with the growing population of older adults aged 60 and older.

Projected population for individuals aged 60 and older will be 92.2 million in 2030.(AoA, 2008).

Projected population for individuals aged 65 and older will be 71.5 million in 2030 and will grow to 86.7 million by 2050.(AoA, 2008).

The projected growth of the older population in the United States will present challenges to policy makers and programs, such as Social Security and Medicare.(Ortman, Velkoff, & Hogan, 2014)

Among community based older persons with higher levels of health and financial literacy were associated with better decision making. (James, Boyle, Bennett & Bennett, 2012).

Improvements in literacy could facilitate better decision making and lead to better health and quality of life in later years.(James, Boyle, Bennett & Bennett, 2012).

Growth of Older Population

Technology is constantly changing and can be difficult for older persons to keep up on those changes.

To assist the older person classes can be offered through the community at the local high school or at the local library.

Older persons can utilize the library, senior centers, 211, and many other services for assistance.

Use of the internet provides tools and resources for better decision making for older persons.

Higher frequency of internet use is associated with better health and financial decision making in older persons.(James, Boyle, Yu & Bennett, 2013).

“Technology is set to transform education over the next decade as much as it has revolutionised the rest of our lives in the past decade. It has huge potential to engage more learners and improve the learning experience” – Matthew Hancock, Business and Enterprise Minister 2014-15, June 2014

Adult continuing education will be of increasing importance, as the median age of our society and the pace of change continue to increase.(Bork, 2001).

Global Campus founder, Maurizio de Franciscis predicts that in the next 20 years an imbalance will occur between the amount of people getting an education and the amount of available universities providing education. He feels there will not be enough universities to

provide the education to the large number of students.

Technology and Education con’t.Many adults are

working past the age of 62 and instead of retiring will be looking for a career change.

Programs and educational services need to be available to meet their needs.

Education can be provided: Traditional settings-college

campuses Online course, mobile

technology Hybrid course- mixture of

online and classroomCollaborative classes

offered outside the classroom

Partnerships with companies to provide “real-life experiences”

Education is about empowering individuals to participate and creating a global meritocracy

- Maurizio de Franciscis

It will be important for lawmakers within their own communities and nationally to seek funding to have programs for community- based services and education. Funding and proper management of the funds will be extremely important to maintain the programs that exist.

Possible Funding

US Census Bureau predicts by 2050, there will be no ethnic majority group

The older population will become more racially and ethnically diverse and the Asian and Hispanic population will double.(Ortman, Velkoff, & Hogan, 2014)

Diversity must be accounted for in planning programs for the older adult population to make them successful.

The Influences of Diversity and the Law

We will need to focus our attention on areas pertinent to the well-being of the adult population such as work and retirement, social networks, neighborhood, discrimination, health disparities, long-term care, physical functioning, caregiving, housing, and end-of-life care.(Baker, 2014)
