NOVA’s OER-Based General
Education Project at ELI
Offer twelve (12) OER GenEd Certificate courses Fall 2013;
Offer twenty-two (22) OER GenEd degree courses Fall 2014;
Create greater awareness of OER at NOVA;
Help faculty to identify existing OER and/or create new OER materials to increase faculty control of course content and improve teaching and learning;
Make education more accessible and affordable for all learners at NOVA and throughout the VCCS by doing away with the requirement for students to purchase and rely on expensive textbooks for these gateway courses.

Current ELI OER Courses We selected high-impact courses for a broad population for phase 1 of the project:
English – ENG 111, 112,125
Math – MTH 151
Science – PHY 201, 202
History – HIS 121, 122
Humanities/Fine Arts – ART 101, 102
Social/Behavioral Sciences – HIS 262
Student Development – SDV 100
These courses can be completed individually or as an entire certificate program. An entire OER degree option will be available starting Fall 2014.

Project Resources
Faculty were provided grant funded stipends
to redesign a course using OER instead of
traditional textbooks.
ELI resources (Librarian, Instructional
Designers) were provided to assist in course
design and development, and OER curation.
All course material developed for this project
will be shared throughout the VCCS and
licensed through Creative Commons after the
pilot.

Significant Cost Savings
A student completing the entire OER-Based
Gen Ed Certificate would potentially save
$1845 over the cost of new textbooks in the
traditional textbook-based courses.
The current estimated savings to students
enrolled in the fall OER pilot courses is in
excess of $140,000!
Anticipated Outcomes These courses will be more affordable and
accessible to community college students.
Students will save thousands of dollars
and all students will have equal access
to all OER course materials.
Student Success rates will improve.
Student demand for these courses
will drive future OER course
development leading to a full
OER-based AS degree.
