Four years later, I’ll be coming out

Page 5: The Book Writing Process

The book idea came to me when

I read a stat…

Page 6: The Book Writing Process

That half the

American workforce

dislikes what they do for a living.

* Conference Board 2005-present

Page 7: The Book Writing Process

BAM! Book idea.

What’s the Difference?

People Who Don’t Like Their Job

People Who Do Like Their Job

Page 8: The Book Writing Process

I graduated.

Page 9: The Book Writing Process

Decided to take a

roadtrip across

America.

Page 10: The Book Writing Process

Bought a RV off Craigslist*Named Maggie Miracles

Page 11: The Book Writing Process

And lined up interviews with people who loved their job.

Page 12: The Book Writing Process

Then, 3 hours into the trip…

Page 14: The Book Writing Process

Crap.

Page 15: The Book Writing Process

We bought airline tickets…

Page 16: The Book Writing Process

And completed 75 interviews.

Page 17: The Book Writing Process

Then I started a job as an auditor.

Page 18: The Book Writing Process

At night, and sometimes at work…

Page 19: The Book Writing Process

I worked on a book proposal.

Page 20: The Book Writing Process

About 10 of them.

Page 21: The Book Writing Process

I hired an agent…

Page 22: The Book Writing Process

And revised book proposals.

Page 23: The Book Writing Process

My agent submitted them to all

the publishers.

Page 24: The Book Writing Process

And I waited.

Page 25: The Book Writing Process

And waited…

Page 26: The Book Writing Process

And then parted ways with the

agent.

Page 27: The Book Writing Process

At this point, I could have quit the book writing process.

Page 28: The Book Writing Process

But instead, I quit my job.

Page 29: The Book Writing Process

And tried to get another roadtrip together.

Page 30: The Book Writing Process

With an RV that wouldn’t break down.

Page 31: The Book Writing Process

I recruited 2 friends to search for sponsors.

Page 32: The Book Writing Process

We were rejected a

lot.

Page 33: The Book Writing Process

Even by this lady.

Page 34: The Book Writing Process

And then we got a food sponsorship.

Page 35: The Book Writing Process

We ate Hot Pockets for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Page 36: The Book Writing Process

It was awesome!

Page 37: The Book Writing Process

And then, after 30 days, not so awesome.

Page 38: The Book Writing Process

It was exactly like Super Size Me.

Page 39: The Book Writing Process

We went into Hot Pocket detox.

Page 40: The Book Writing Process

A week later, we found a sponsor in:

Page 41: The Book Writing Process

They were a block away

<--- My apartment

<--- Jobing.com HQ

Page 42: The Book Writing Process

And they sponsored the purchase of this RV.

Page 43: The Book Writing Process

With this cool wrap.

Page 44: The Book Writing Process

And they sponsored the whole trip.

Page 45: The Book Writing Process

16,000 miles…

Page 46: The Book Writing Process

38 states…

Page 47: The Book Writing Process

And 300 interviews

with people who love their job.

Page 48: The Book Writing Process

Epic.

Page 49: The Book Writing Process

But then, it was time to

write a book.

Page 50: The Book Writing Process

Jobing.com hired us on to write the book*

* Among many other things

Page 51: The Book Writing Process

And I went to work.

Page 52: The Book Writing Process

I wrote the book.

* 50,000 words, 224 pages.

Page 53: The Book Writing Process

This was what it was about.

Page 54: The Book Writing Process

And I decided I didn’t like it.

Page 55: The Book Writing Process

It was too much about

us…

Page 56: The Book Writing Process

And not about the original topic.

People Who Don’t Like Their Job

People Who Do Like Their Job

What’s the Difference?

Page 57: The Book Writing Process

So 5 months and 1 book got thrown away.

Page 58: The Book Writing Process

It was a frustrating, confusing time.

Page 59: The Book Writing Process

Months passed…

Page 60: The Book Writing Process

The Stock Market crashed…

Page 61: The Book Writing Process

Obama got elected…

Page 62: The Book Writing Process

And I went back to work.

Page 63: The Book Writing Process

I transcribed every word ever spoken to us.*

* About 350,000 words

Page 64: The Book Writing Process

I cut out my favorite excerpts.

Page 65: The Book Writing Process

Organized them like puzzle pieces into chapters.

Page 66: The Book Writing Process

And edited the book so you could read the entire thing

on a flight.

Page 67: The Book Writing Process

Then I flew from Phoenix to Denver.

Page 68: The Book Writing Process

And read the whole thing.

Page 69: The Book Writing Process

Success!

Page 70: The Book Writing Process

Then I learned how to use

Adobe InDesign.

Page 71: The Book Writing Process

I made the coffee shop my first home…

Page 72: The Book Writing Process

The office my 2nd home…

Page 73: The Book Writing Process

And my home my 3rd home.

Page 74: The Book Writing Process

I went through 10,000 photos and picked out the best ones.

Page 75: The Book Writing Process

This one didn’t make it.

Page 76: The Book Writing Process

489 Photos like this one did.

Page 77: The Book Writing Process

And I built a book I freaking loved.

Page 78: The Book Writing Process

I gave the book to my boss…

Page 79: The Book Writing Process

Who gave the book to her boss…

Page 80: The Book Writing Process

Who decided to publish it if the

design improved.

Page 81: The Book Writing Process

So the talented young lady who

designed our RV…

Page 82: The Book Writing Process

Sacrificed two long weekends to improve the

design of the book with me.

Page 83: The Book Writing Process

And now we had a book to go to print.

Page 84: The Book Writing Process

So we went to a printer.

Page 85: The Book Writing Process

“We got a quote.”

Page 86: The Book Writing Process

And found out that for the price of 1,000 copies of

our book, we could buy…

Page 87: The Book Writing Process

A Maserati.

Page 88: The Book Writing Process

20% down payment on a 3bd/2ba house w/ a pool in

Scottsdale

Page 89: The Book Writing Process

Or a really, really fun night in Vegas.

Page 90: The Book Writing Process

So we decided to go to China.

Page 91: The Book Writing Process

Meet HE Yong

(aka Leo)

Page 92: The Book Writing Process

Leo and I have exchanged 239 emails and counting…

Page 93: The Book Writing Process

On 12/22, I received the first 25 copies in a box

from Beijing.

Page 94: The Book Writing Process

On 1/20, I pick up 992 copies from the Los

Angeles port.

Page 95: The Book Writing Process

On 2/2, the book is available on

Amazon.

Page 96: The Book Writing Process

I hope you buy it.
