THE BIOME PERMANENT ICE

LOCATION- Polar land masses - Polar ice caps (Arctic, Greenland, Antarctica)- high areas (top of mountains)

- Less than 50 cm annual precipitation (mostly falling as snow)

- Average Arctic winter temperatures are -30*C and average summer temperatures are from 3 to 14*C.

- Antarctica has recorded a temperature as low as -89*C

CLIMATE

- Strong winds- Lot of sun- Very small soil- Very cold - Mainly ice- Some parts are mountainous

PHYSICAL FEATURES

- The plants are dark colored to absorb more light.

- Only two plants grow in the Antarctica.- Over 100 species of plants grow in the

Arctic.- Lichens (consist of fungi and algae)- Moss

PLANTS

- In the Arctic polar bears, walruses, arctic foxes and some insects.

- Antarctica has mostly penguins and sea mammals

- To retain heat: fat layers, tightly packed feathers, thick coats, no external ears and

staying close together in herds
