DESCRIPTION
This presentation was given at the EAQUALS conference in Budapest in April 2014. Abstract: Stephen Covey’s seminal leadership and management book, ‘The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People’, has been consistently voted in the Top 10 most influential business books of all time, and has been widely applied in Fortune 500 companies, governments, and educational institutions around the world. This workshop looks at how applying what Covey calls ‘7 timeless principles’ to a school can maximise its organisational integrity and effectiveness. We will look at what these principles are, the distinctions between production and production capability, engaging proactively with the space between stimulus and response, and how schools can build a culture which engages with its stakeholders and creatively innovates for the future.

Habit 1 – Be proactive

Reactive organisations make decisions around the behaviour of others. ‘Outside in.’
Proactive organisations take the initiative – they make commitments and stick to them. They take responsibility for the situations they are in and the results they get. ‘Inside Out’.

Question
Are you spending your time doing what is most effective for your school? And what about the rest of your life? What else needs nurturing for your school to flourish?
So…
Prioritise clearly. State weekly and daily goals. Align with long term vision. Identify key goals for the key parts of your life – don’t let work dominate.
Include ‘partner’, ‘parent’, ‘friend’, ‘contributor’. Delegate, outsource, delete. Say No if it doesn’t align with your vision. Ensure Q2 activities are reducing Q1 demands. Stick with the plan. Make commitments and keep to them.
