• STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO RESEARCH AN ADVERTISEMENT THAT INCLUDES ALCOHOL AND
RE-MAKE THE ADVERTISEMENT TO ENSURE IT INFORMS THE PUBLIC ABOUT THE EFFECTS OF
ALCOHOL ON SELF AND OTHERS
TEACHER BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGEWHAT IS ALCOHOL?
ALCOHOL IS A POWERFUL DRUG WHICH SLOWS DOWN THE ACTIVITY IN THE BRAIN AND THE NERVOUS SYSTEM. THE ACTIVE DRUG CONTAINED IN ALL ALCOHOLIC DRINKS IS ETHANOL. THIS DRUG IS PRODUCED AS A RESULT OF FERMENTATION OF GRAINS (BEER), VEGETABLES (VODKA) AND FRUITS (WINE), CHANGING SUGARS INTO ETHYL ALCOHOL. PURE ALCOHOL HAS NO TASTE AND IS A COLOURLESS LIQUID. ALCOHOLIC DRINKS VARY IN APPEARANCE AND TASTE DUE TO THE OTHER INGREDIENTS CONTAINED WITHIN THEM AND AS A RESULT OF THE METHOD OF MANUFACTURE. ALCOHOL CAN BE CALLED A FOOD BECAUSE IT PROVIDES ENERGY. IT DOES NOT CONTAIN PROTEIN OR VITAMINS. IT DOES NOT NEED TO BE DIGESTED IN THE STOMACH. IT PASSES STRAIGHT INTO THE BLOODSTREAM.
FACTS ABOUT THE USE OF ALCOHOL
• IT IS AGAINST THE LAW TO SELL ALCOHOL TO A PERSON UNDER THE AGE OF 18
• IT IS ILLEGAL TO DRIVE WITH A BLOOD ALCOHOL CONCENTRATION OF MORE THAN .05. FOR PEOPLE ON L AND P PLATES THE LIMIT IS .02.
• THE LIVER BREAKS DOWN ALCOHOL IN THE BODY. DRINKING COFFEE CANNOT SPEED UP THIS PROCESS.
• A PERSON CAN BECOME DEPENDENT ON THE REGULAR INTAKE OF ALCOHOL.
• COMBINING ALCOHOL AND OTHER DRUGS CAN BE HARMFUL
• MANY PEOPLE LOSE THEIR INHIBITIONS WHEN THEY DRINK ALCOHOL
• THERE IS A POPULAR MISCONCEPTION THAT ALCOHOL IS A STIMULANT. HOWEVER, IT IS A DEPRESSANT AND REDUCES INHIBITIONS BY SLOWING DOWN PART OF THE BRAIN, MAKING PEOPLE TAKE RISKS THEY WOULD NOT NORMALLY TAKE.

PSYCHOEDUCATIONAL THEORIES:
• PSYCHOEDUCATIONAL THEORIES ARE DIRECTLY CONCERNED ABOUT THE UNDERLYING PERSONAL FACTORS THAT MAY INFLUENCE STUDENT BEHAVIOUR. THE KEY ASPECT IS TO DEVELOP A SATISFYING PSYCHOLOGICAL LEARNING ENVIRONMENT WHICH ALLOWS INDIVIDUALS TO STRIVE AND SUCCEED IN THEIR EDUCATIONAL CONTEXT.
• GLASSERS CHOICE THEORY: CHOICE THEORY REQUIRES THE EDUCATOR TO EXAMINE BEHAVIOURAL ISSUES AS A DIRECT RESULT OF THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT OR A STUDENT’S INTERACTION WITH THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT.
