SettingStarling City

Starling City is the appropriate location for the event of the scene because of the following:

1. Nyssa al Ghul returns to Starling City for Sarah similar to Petruchio visiting Padua

2. Detective Lance eventually becomes similar to a ruler in Starling City. This is highly relatable to Baptista Minola’s position in Padua.

Detective Lance (Major)

Detective Lance is a well translated match to Baptista Minola for many reasons:

1. Detective Lance is father to Sarah(Katherine) and Laurel(Bianca) Lance.

2. Detective Lance must decide between two men for his daughter Laurel (Bianca) to marry. He must decide between Tommy Merlyn (Hortensio) and Oliver Queen (Lucentio)

3. Detective Lance is considered wealthy compared to most others in Starling City, similar to Baptista Minola being wealthy in Padua.

Laurel Lance (Major)

Laurel Lance is a well translated match to Bianca Minola for many reasons:

1. Laurel Lance has two men in her life that wish to date her (Oliver Queen and Tommy Merlyn.) Similar to Bianca Minola who has Lucentio and Hortensio, both of which wish to marry her.

2. Laurel Lance has a very cautious father who oversees all men she dates due to previous bad experiences with her sister’s boyfriends. This situation is similar to Bianca Minola’s father overseeing her relations until Katherine has married.

3. Laurel Lance picks to date Oliver Queen (Lucentio) instead of Tommy Merlyn (Hortensio) due to Tommy’s death, similar to picking Lucentio instead of wedding Hortensio.

Sara Lance (Major)

Sara Lance is a well translated match to Katherine Minola for many reasons:

1. Sara Lance has a rebellious attitude similar to the attitude given off by Katherine Minola towards certain ideas/beliefs.

2. Sara Lance has her soul stolen and has a so called “re-birth” to find her soul, similar to Bianca after marrying Petruchio

3. Sarah Lance has a sister (Laurel) who was always the more popular and well like Lance sister, similar to Bianca being more well-liked than Katherine.

Oliver Queen (Major)

Oliver Queen is a well translated match to Lucentio for many reasons:

1. Oliver Queen must disguise himself as the superhero “The Green Arrow” similar to Lucentio who disguises himself as a tutor in place of Tranio.

2. Oliver Queen is in love with Laurel Lance (Bianca) and must compete with Tommy Merlyn to date her.

3. Oliver Queen is also very wealthy due to his father’s company “Queen Industries” similar to the wealth received by Lucentio from his father’s wealth.

Tommy Merlyn (Major)

Tommy Merlyn is a well translated match to Hortensio for many reasons:

1. Tommy must compete with Oliver Queen (Lucentio) for the opportunity to date Laurel Lance (Bianca)

2. Tommy is very wealthy and claims to be able to support him and Laurel, similar to Hortensio being able to support Bianca and himself.

3. Tommy Merlyn has the greatest relationship with Nyssa al Ghul (Petruchio) due to Tommy’s father being a member of “The League of Assassins” which Nyssa al Ghul’s father is the leader of. Therefore, Tommy (Hortensio) could be viewed as having the best relationship with Nyssa al Ghul (Petruchio)

John Diggle (Minor)

John Diggle is a well translated match to Tranio for many reasons:

1. John Diggle is Oliver Queen’s (Lucentio) bodyguard/servant, similar to the relationship between Tranio and Lucentio.

2. John Diggle has previously disguised himself as “The Green Arrow” to help Oliver Queen stay out of prison for crimes he committed as “The Green Arrow”. Tranio disguises himself very similarly to how Diggle does so that Tranio can attend school for Lucentio while attempting to tutor Bianca.

3. John Diggle eventually becomes more of a friend to Oliver than a servant, which I also believe occurs between Lucentio and Tranio.

Sebastian Blood (Minor)

Sebastian Blood is a well translated match to Gremio for many reasons:

1. Sebastian Blood is believed to be in love Laurel Lance (Bianca) while he is running for Mayor, the same feelings that Gremio has towards Bianca.

2. Sebastian Blood is eventually killed and therefore he does not get the chance to date Laurel Lance. While Gremio may not be killed, he also does not get the chance to marry Bianca.

3. Sebastian Blood is investigated by Laurel Lance (Bianca) while she is an assistant district attorney, which eventually leads to Laurel not having feelings for Blood. Gremio puts himself in a situation similar to this when he hires a tutor for Bianca, ruining his chances of marrying Bianca.

Nyssa al Ghul (Minor)

Nyssa al Ghul is a well translated match to Petruchio for many reasons:

1. Nyssa al Ghul and Sarah Lance (Katherine) become lovers, the same relationship that Katherine and Petruchio have once they marry.

2. Nyssa al Ghul comes to Starling City in search of Sarah in order to recreate their love. Petruchio’s did not intend to come to Padua in search of love, but eventually finds it in Padua similar to Nyssa does in Starling City.

3. Nyssa al Ghul is rebellious of her father, similar to Petruchio being considered a rebel throughout the Taming of the Shrew by dressing embarrassingly at the wedding, and causing many other chaotic scenes.

SARAH has tied LAUREL’s hands.LAUREL: Untie me immediately SARA: Not until you tell me whether you like OLIVER or TOMMY betterLAUREL: I do not know SARAHSARA: You lie too often!LAUREL: If you wish to marry one of them, I will hook you up with them.SARA: Are you trying to make money from this? Oliver has more than Tommy because Malcolm cut him off.LAUREL: No I am not, now untie me at once

Or even mocked you SARA?SARA: Her silence flouts me, and I’ll be revenged.[SARA acts as if she is going to hit/hurt LAUREL]LANCE: Leave the lair now SARA!SARA: You’re not going to listen to what I have to say? She’s your favorite, and I’m going to die single!LANCE: I have never said that nor has a man ever had to put up with this besides me

[BLOOD enters with OLIVER, NYSSA enters with TOMMY, DIGGLE enters disguised as OLIVER]BLOOD: Nice to see you DetectiveLANCE: Same to you BLOOD, as well as you others.NYSSA: Where is your daughter SARA, Detective LANCE?LANCE: Why do you wish to know?BLOOD: I told you not to ask immediately NYSSA.NYSSA: Excuse me Detective LANCE, I am NYSSA. I’m sorry to inform you so bluntly, but I am your daughter’s former lover.LANCE: What? I do not understand, you shall not want the grief that my daughter SARA presents.

NYSSA: I do though sir, if you intend to give her away to me.LANCE: Who even are you? What will I call you?NYSSA: I am NYSSA, I am well-known throughout the League.LANCE: I have heard of that more often recently. Take these men to my daughters, they will both teach my daughters.[A servant exits with OLIVER and TOMMY]NYSSA: Thank you sir, I am similar to my father. If I shall marry Sara, what benefits will I receive?LANCE: After my death, the one half of my lands, And, in possession, twenty thousand crowns.

NYSSA: If I die before she does, I’ll give her all the land I own and rent.LANCE: All that counts is her love.NYSSA: Trust me sir, she has all of my love.LANCE: My daughter is one of a kind, I hope you become successful. NYSSA: Thank you sir, I am well prepared. [Enter TOMMY]TOMMY: I am fearful of your daughterLANCE: Can you teach my daughter anything?TOMMY: I’m not sure, she hit me with the instrument when I tried to instruct herNYSSA: I love this girl more and more everyday.LANCE: Come with me, don’t become discouraged.[All exit except NYSSA]

Your daughter is peaceful and relaxed.SARA: I will have you killed NYSSA

DIGGLE: Is that what you believe is things going great?NYSSA: I am happy with the way things are going, relax gentleman. LANCE: It’s your choice, congrats sir!NYSSA: We will marry on Sunday, let’s get everything prepared. [NYSSA and SARA exit]BLOOD: Has a wedding ever been completed so quickly?LANCE: I do not know, but this is risky for both me and him. I can only profit from this being a perfect match for my daughter. BLOOD: NYSSA is definitely a keeper!DIGGLE: I love LAUREL more than you can imagine.
