The Prayer Flag Tradition

‘To me there are few things more beautiful thancolourful prayer flags fluttering in the wind- sometimeswaving gently, sometimes raging; a dance of shadow andlight. There is perhaps no simpler way to create goodmerit in this troubled world of ours than to put prayerflags up for the benefit of other living beings. Prayerflags are not just pretty pieces of coloured cloth withfunny writing on them. The ancient Buddhist prayers, mantras and powerful symbols displayed on them producea spiritual vibration that is activated and carried by thewind across the countryside. All beings that are touchedby the wind are uplifted and a little happier. The silentprayers are blessings spoken on the breath of nature.Just as a drop of water can permeate the ocean, prayersdissolved in the wind extend to fill all of space.’

The Tibetan word for prayer flag isDar Cho

“Dar” means to increase life, fortune, health and wealth

“Cho” means all living beings Prayer flags are simple devices that,

together with the natural energy ofthe wind, quietly harmonize theenvironment, increasing happiness andgood fortune among all living beings

represents good fortune

represents awareness, vast vision, confidence, joy, humility and power

The colour order is always: yellow, green, red, white and blue.

Originally the writing and images on prayer flags werepainted by hand, one at a time. Woodblocks, carefullycarved in mirror image relief, were introduced fromChina in the 15th century.

A mantra is a power-laden syllable orseries of syllables or sounds with thecapacity of influencing certain energydimensions.

Sutras are texts based on theteachings directly derived from thehistorical Buddha who taught in India2500 years ago.

When raising prayer flags proper motivation is important. If they are put up with the attitude “I will benefit fromdoing this” – that is an ego-centered motivation and thebenefits will be small and narrow. If the attitude is “May all beings everywhere receivebenefit and find happiness,” the virtue generated by suchmotivation greatly increases the power of the prayers.
