Squatter Settlements
A squatter settlement is an abandoned
building or piece of land that houses
people who do not pay for the land or
services for the land.
Squatter Settlements are the
product of population increase and
housing shortages.
It is estimated over 175 million
people live in squatter
settlements around the world.
Squatter settlements lack services
because the city nor the residents
can afford them.
Latrines are
commonly dug
for waste and
water is taken
from a well close
to the
settlement.
Squatter Settlements usually lack
schools and roads. The electricity for
them is commonly stolen by running wire
to near power lines.
