Island Paradise!The Last Frontier
Posting II, Peoples and Empires
Terry Onley
French explorer Antoine de Bougainville
left Nantes in 1766, and discovered
Tahiti in April of 1768…
He was most impressed with
the health, beauty, and general
demeanor of the people.
Especially the women…
Captain James Cook made several
voyages to the Pacific Islands shortly
thereafter, and was similarly impressed
by these kind, gentle folk, so unlike
the warlike people of Europe…
Huh?!?!
Unfortunately, in Feb. of 1779, a group of these peaceful folk
killed Captain Cook and 4 of his Marines on a beach on the
idyllic island of Hawaii…
The Chiefs then
disemboweled him,
baked him, and
removed his bones, preserving them as a gesture of respect…
Aloha, Captain Cook!
