VOCATIONAL EDUCATIONSOCIETY COMPLETES

43 YEARS

South Delhi Polytechnic for Women is in one of the oldest cities of the world. It lies on the banks of the River Jamuna. Ancient artifacts like Ashoka’s pillar and the Old Fort take us

to the time of Buddha, hundreds of years before Christ.

India is known to have had some of the finest education in history. Scholars visited us from remote Cities and Continents . They left records of their historic visits. The Polytechnic in

return has/had Staff and Students all over India and the World. This gives a really colourful and creative atmosphere to our Campus.

The Polytechnic was established 43 years ago, with a handful of students at South Extension. It has now grown to be the largest in the Country, if not in the World.

This is run under the aegis of the Vocational Education Society, since 1963.

You can see we have evolved in an astonishing manner. An exciting climate prevails at our Campus. I hope the following pages

say something that could lead to a better and richer life for you.

We find that despite the world shrinking and Man reaching Mars, a Woman’s Education continues to hang in balance. It is this

imbalance that we constantly try to redress. We strongly feel the right to a skill is a skill that stands by you and with you in life.

WHAT IS THE VERDANT VALLEY OFVOCATIONAL STUDIES?

The verdant valley of vocational Studies is peppered with perennials that are Evergreen. They are flowering or fruitful blossoms ripened into current cash crops. There are mainly four species of Trees. Those of Pure Arts, Art-Based and the Non-Arts. There are also horticulture hybrids, which are both an Art & Science.

The Tree of Pure Arts is pristine and prospective. They are original, timeless skills that outlast the season or soil.

The Art-Based Trees are also artistic but have attributes of obvious utility. They can be marketed or canned as 'commercial produce'. They may reach worthy warehouses or carried as consignments, abroad.

The Non-Art shrubs are study and entrench themselves within a field. They grow but inhabit their own habitat. They may reach for the skies but never shift the sands.

The hybrids in the 'Non-Art' Arbour, are 'cross-cultural'. They are forever cross breeding and evolving. They are therfore smart survivors. They transform and renew themselves into florid fruits of purpose and 'peopled' prosperity.

WHY ARE VOCATIONAL COURSES

POPULAR?

A Student goes into any kind of Education, for an Occupation or to occupy herself. A Student goes in for Vocational

Education only because she wants a career that she will care for. Always!

Vocational Courses are popular because they are a channel for chances and choices. A Studio that scales and windows your

Outlook. A lab that trains you to make your dreams as actual destinations.

Women are directly drawn to this wonderful world. They see it as a classroom for creative careers.

GLOBAL TRENDS IN THE VOCATIONAL INDUSTRY

Vocational Education has not only become professional but also gone global. There is universal demand for it as

Employment and as a market.

Global standards have crept in with global appeal. A knowledge of economics, IT, Management & Retailing

skills have become requisite.

In summation, we must stress that there is no more a need for Global-Awareness. It has 'already happened'.

What Vocational Students must become, are skilled in the Principles of Global Business.

VOCATIONAL TRENDS IN THE INDUSTRY

Vocational Trends are Job-oriented. They tilt towards optimum utilization of skills for Employement.A greater value is placed on multi-purpose skills. Employers also expect Computer Literacy and Business Skills.

Job Experience is taken into account for selection of Cadidates. Practical Practices have thus, have become important.

For example: in a Dept. like Holistic Health & Fitness, once the basics are learnt and multi-purpose skills acquired, the Third year is completely devoted to Internship and Apprenticeship. To work in Naturopathy centres, Hospitals, Multi-gyms, Schools, Colleges & Corporate Houses.

Hotel Catering & Hospitality Students get to work in the Industry, during summer/winter breaks. The other trend is creation of conductive conditions for Free-lancing. Vocations in Fine Art, Advertising Art / Computer Science / Web Design, through the year, encourage free-lancing. Students meet deadlines and take order / consignments.

In the Dept. of 'Music & Event Management' again, Students get exposure & gain experience, during/after scheduled hours.

STUDENT’S FEED BACKResponses and Reactions of ex-Students on Vocational Courses

(in their very own vernacular!)

Dear Future Student,Indian girls suffer from inferiority complex. We do not know our capabilities. Vocational courses makes you know about your skills & qualities. Our assets strengths, desires…. We get a special enthu for life! Shikha Sain (Holistic Healer & Fitness Trainer)

Dear Potential Pupil,Will you join after school, like me? You will then love the way, Polytechnic treats you as adults. But then watch out! As the ‘grownup attitude’ extends to Submissions and Assignments. It is only later, when we join the industry, that we feel the value of ‘meeting deadlines’ and facing challenges, both in small & mega things.

Sonia Talwar ( Music & Event Manager)

Dear Poly Student,Rather than go in for glam. Find out how old is the Polytechnic? Do they have a Placement Cell? Are teachers experienced? Are they concerned and supportive? Do they have chartered buses? Are there interactive lectures and visits from the industry? Is there more stress on Projects and Practicals?
