OVERVIEW
Sociology of the City is an experiential project-based curriculum for recently arrived high school ELLs that fosters engagement in positive change in NYC communities while infusing English language development.
STUDENTS WILL: • Learn about urban sociology theories
• Map different socio-economic demographics in NYC
• Conduct original research and community surveys
• Create an evidence-based project for social change
• Present their research and project plans to key community members
• Learn strategies for project evaluation
• Complete an academic research paper
• Define their own skills and strengths
• Develop both leadership and collaborative skills
• Develop both academic and social English
OUTCOMES AND ALIGNMENT
• Aligned with Common Core State Standards for high school Literacy
• Incorporates Common Core State Standards for high school Statistics
• Project Based Assessment Task in line with New York State Performance Standards Consortium
• Incorporates content outcomes and skills to foster research, analysis and critical thinking skills necessary for college readiness
