DESCRIPTION

Letter from Franklin’s desk (editor) We have this past month celebrated the courage and strength of South African women, who took a stand against inequality and injustice done unto not only women but any human being. Through many stories and events we are shown how the voice, the opinion and ideas of a woman is not always valued; how abuse, violence and sexist remarks prohibits the true value of her. Woman are the anchors of our communities! This month we celebrate the grace and flair of a woman by giving you a pre-spring edition of Turquoise – in addition to this we also welcome the Spring sun, Mother Nature in her 6changing season as flowers bloom. Enjoy Articles such as our Womens Day, our lovely Bukiwe, the Nyanga Project and many more. Let us celebrate woman for the bright future that they carry and the gift they are. Enjoy Turqouise – the pre spring edition. Love Franklin www.SmilingOne.com

Letter from the CEO

I feel incredibly grateful as I reflect on this truly special month where we have celebrated women. What inspires me deeply is that through COC Education Women are finding their voices and beginning to walk a path true to their hearts. The more we as women understand what we hold deep within and live into our special purpose, the stronger will our light shine. We are in charge of how we walk and experience this journey, nobody else. it does not matter what is said or done unto us…

“Above all, be the heroine of your life, not the victim.” Nora Ephron

Each challenge offers each of us a platform to grow from – it is right here that we discover what we are made of. And with a COC toolkit filled with personal leadership tools we chip of the edges and rise above. Oh yeah… we inspire love by simply being love…

May you enjoy our newsletter, as always shaped with love by Change Agent Franklin Esau!

OUR PROJECTS – YOUTH AT RISK

A TRULY SPECIAL WOMAN

Bukiwe’s COC activation by Franklin

It was four years ago that our beautiful flower, Bukiwe Zingato heard about our personal leadership development programme called ‘The Responsible Individual’ and that sessions were being held every Saturday at the Ivy Nyovane Educare in Nyanga East. Being in a poverty struck community, surrounded by gangsterism and crime, she decided to join the programme looking for answers on how to rise above her circumstances.

Today Bukiwe is one of our leading Youth Community Builders whom SmilingOne provides with a bursary for furthering her education.

Bukiwe shares: “It has been a journey that I thought I would never see. I have been dreaming to attend school and it came true. Since February my aim was to grasp all the subjects as I am really determine to do my best to achieve my degree one day. The learning is very challenging – especially time management. Out of school I have other responsibilities as well but what has work for me is to make school my number one priority. School exposes me to different scenarios and different people. It has been so amazing because it is people with different ways – each their own character. The lecturers are always supportive and you can go to them anytime for clarity. One of my supportive lecturers is leaving to go overseas. He leaves me with an important lesson: “it is not about the subject we as lecturers teach you students, it is about what you going to carry out in your life, how you going to resolve challenges and how you view things in life”.

“In my sharing and caring sessions I thank Franklin and Karina for being the best coaches and mentors. They challenge me to work harder and to get in touch with what I go through emotionally. I do have a lot of healing to go through and I am working hard on getting to the point where I can fulfil my dreams and live my passion.

I observe that things have really changed! Even the way I talk has changed, which is helping me a

lot in school. There is a lot awaiting me still and it will happen when the time is right”.

OUR PROJECTS – REINTEGRATION PRIOR RELEASE

SA PRISONS: Change Agents in the Making by Karina

Certificate Ceremony Malmesbury Prison

Our Malmesbury Change Agent team shares:

The Graduation is all about celebration – giving recognition and gratitude to those Peers and Candidates who wholeheartedly participate in enhancing their lives, becoming responsible individuals.

They have committed themselves on a Journey of Self Discovery to the core of their Being, shaping tools and opportunities to explore who they are and their purpose of living.

The Ceremony also serves to raise awareness amongst offenders, encouraging them to explore and consciously participate in the creation of their lives.

We celebrate this very special day with everyone. Bradley & Jabu

Karina shares: it is days like these that are great reminders of why we invest our hearts into the

SA prisons. It radiates from each graduate, who have shown great courage on this journey of finding back home into their hearts… such joyful celebration… each one of them knowing that it does not matter how we speak about our change… all that matters is living it every single day… only then can we share the gift of change with someone else. It was a great privilege to celebrate today! Celebrating each other… celebrating ourselves… knowing that each day we practice from our heart is another day to celebrate!

Franklin shares: my heart dances to the

commitment from each Peer and Participant, for the courage and openness to explore their individual journeys. It is never easy to discover facets about oneself. It fills our cups with emotions rarely expressed by a man; it opens our hearts to the healing process of our past mistakes. My cheer in celebration to the Certificate Ceremony goes to each one of you who is taking steps towards discovering more about yourselves. Live and practice the gift of change, for the hands you hold can be inspired by knowing a marvellous and honourable individual such as yourselves.

Thank you for participating in the Malmesbury Prison Process and thank you Karina for bringing the process to Malmesbury Prison!

OUR PROJECTS – REINTEGRATION POST RELEASE

REINTEGRATION

Malcolm’s ‘Car Project’ (The Boys from Ocean View) by Malcolm Booysen

As a young boy I have always been fascinated with cars and the mechanical aspect of cars, I consider myself to be a true ‘petrol head’ (someone who loves cars), I have been working on cars from an early age. The real inspiration came from seeing other men working and building cars and I always wanted to do that. Therefore, I decided to have the ‘Car Project’.

The inspiration behind the ‘Car Project’ is to give back to my community and what better way to start a ‘Car Project’ to involve the youth of Ocean View. With SmilingOne I am creating a platform where youngsters can direct positive energy and present their work, shaping their lives by being part of this project. Because it is more than just the skills we learn… mechanics, panel beating or spray painting, I also facilitate ‘The Responsible Individual’ program. This gives us a chance to discover more about ourselves. It is also the opportunity to get kids busy with a direction in their lives apart from the youth using alcohol and drugs, practicing risk behaviour.

Because it is more than just the skills we learn… mechanics, panel beating or spray painting, we also have ‘The Responsible Individual’ programme. Which give us a chance to discover more about ourselves.

In future I would like to get more of the youth involved because I believe that this is only the start of what is still to come. Anyone is welcome to join. We are more than just a car project; we are all family, discovering more about each other and our potential.

*Stay tune for future updates on our Ocean View boys and their ‘Car Project’!

OUR PROJECTS –COMMUNITY BUILDING

Nyanga Youth Development Program

by Franklin Esau

Ivy Nyovane more than a crèche…

The Ivy Nyovane Educare is a great platform within the community – it is more than just an crèche to the people of Nyanga East. A Grandma just enrolled her grandchild at Ivy Nyovane. After her consultation with the principal Vuyiswa it is mentioned that the Grandma also goes to church here. I was so surprised to hear that the building is also open on Sundays to a church. Ma Esther (founder of Ivy Nyovane Educare) shares: Yes my Dear, we do have church here on Sundays. It is elders of the community who commune every Sunday in ceremony of their religion. We also have the occasional member who would like to use the space for functions. Our last function was a lady who had a party for her kid, along with all her friends and family. Plus we have the community builders project every Saturday. So we do not operate only as a crèche, Ivy Nyovane is a place for the community. With Ma Esther and the vision that she have for Ivy Nyovane Educare, Nyanga East has been given a gift and an exceptional platform in their community.

Beyond this Ivy Nyovane Educare serves as an educational platform and a place of job creation along with the care-takers and teachers that aid Ma Esther in her vision. Ma Esther – a woman who presents the gift that she is in her community and a pillar in society. SmilingOne salutes you Ma Esther for the passion that flows through you – affecting those around you – in love and care!

SKILLS AND DEVELOPMENT

Learning

How wonderful it is to learn these valuable life lessons from the connections we share with fellow peolple? Moments spend together laughing, crying and even if the moments is brief we share our journeys.

Our workshop this month was creative with colourful sharing. It helped me understand relationships with new people I have met; relationships with family, friends and colleagues – each individual has their own way, their own opinions and feelings. Spending time with them is teaching me about ‘Ubuntu’ – a special bonding between humans who care. I am given the opportunity to learn great lessons on my journey, each of these individual touching my life.

Karina shares: Stunning workshop for our TRI Facilitators – Guides deepening their toolboxes, merging deeper into Release, deeper into understanding and awakening to our purpose, deeper into embracing how much we are because of and through each other. As Franklin nicely puts it: “I am a Guide being guided in my process along with someone else”.

Woman’s Day

Woman’s Day

Today we celebrate truly special woman who have made themselves a priority and in doing so added tremendous value to their families and their local communities. We invited five of our project women in COC education out for a very special treat – Ma Esther, Vuyiswa, Elsie, Bukiwe & Bulelwa and included was of course our latest family edition Kuyinthando (only 2 months old). Vuyiswa shares:

1. I am grateful to be a woman because there are a lot of challenges that I imagine to

achieve in my life. 2. I am grateful to meet SmilingOne, they opened

my mind, I am also grateful to be a care community worker. 3. I am also grateful of what SmilingOne teach me, lastly I

want to thank SmilingOne for their support. Ma Esther shares: I am grateful for everything that happened that day, I felt very special because Karina took us out as the SmilingOne Team. I even got a present as an adult from Karina. We then went to the Arts Cape enjoying myself because it was my first time there. I was happy when I came back from the outing when I found out that Shaun and Ivan did a great job they looked after the children and they left the place clean. A deep-felt gratitude to our special women. May you continue to shine your light so brightly!

The Witch of Portobello

A journey of discovery and understanding for a

woman who goes through complex challenges

about herself. Finding her path in love and care,

sharing herself with her community.

This book teaches me about the perception I

carry of women as a whole – not to regard their

role in our lives of just ordinary. Each woman has

her own special journey – touching lives every

day. The human journey has many aspects and in

such regards, should a woman and her journey

not be taken any less than each human being. As

the special women in our newsletter this month.

From Wikipedia: “How do we find the courage to

be true to ourselves – even if we are unsure of

who we are?” That is the central question of

international bestselling author Paulo Coelho’s

profound work, The Witch of Portobello. It is the

story of a mysterious woman named Athena, told

by the many who knew her well – or hardly at all.
