The theory of Propp is that there are a range of stock characters in slasher films. These characters help to tell the basic structure of a slasher film and are a common convention of the modern day slasher.
These characters include:
-The Final Girl
- The Killer/Monster
- The Group of Friends
- The Sexually Active Girl
- The Benfactor
The final girl is the one girl at the end of the film to survive. She is often represented as quite intellectual and plain, not sexually active and essentially a ‘plain girl.’
The monster or killer in a slasher film is essentially the main character. They are often masked and psychologically disturbed, but are a human-like character. Without the monster, there would not be a slasher film.
- Very early stages of German film making
- Did not have the same technology as Hollywood did so had to have their own style
- Used lighting and shadows to create a unique dark side of human experiences

. You can be more explicit with your material
. It can cause controversy
. There are barely any restrictions
. There will be less people who will be able to view the film
. More likely to be illegally downloaded by under 18’s
. Less marketing due to a smaller audience
. Can be shown to a wider audience
. Could get more sales and marketing as the audience would be greater
. Will have to be careful with the content
. May fail to attract big horror fans as it is ‘only’ a fifteen
