This opening long shot of the girl in Sin City is also an establishing shot, it shows her surroundings and the lady herself, being portrayed as the femme fatale of the film.

The red colour of her dress could represent danger or could be foreshadowing her death which is about to occur.

The black and white scene gives the film that film noir, but by introducing the red in her dress it gives it the neo-noir factor, as well as the big city, the bright lights and dark shadowy tones.

There is then a medium shot in shallow focus of the femme fatale showing her deep red lips and dress. We can see in the background, a male in a suit, the typical attire for a film noir character. The bright smudge of light in the background makes the characters stand out as they are more dominant and are in darker shadows.

Shot/reverse shot is used and shows the conversation between the 2 characters. The last shot is also an over the shoulder shot, which also shows the conversation. The fact that the last shot is a close up also shows the characters emotions and expressions. Cigarettes are often key features to film noir and is shown in the last shot by the femme fatale.

This shot dominates her red dress and red lips which give the film its neo-noir title. This two shot shows the distance in the lady and the closeness with the male character. The shadow across his face is alsoa key feature to film noir to show the dark inhumane side to his character.

An editing technique has been used here to show only the silhouettes of the two characters in negative. It is also a long shot as we can see both of the characters bodies. It also shows the surroundings of the characters as we can see tall apartment block buildings in a city which also fits in to the film noir genre.

This shot is a high angle and givesa different perspective as we can see the male character and his gun andalso the female character who he is holding as she has just been shot.It is also a close up as we can see the emotion on his face, he looks upset that he has just had to kill his lover.

A high angle is used here showing the male holdingthe female in his arm. Our eyes are automatically drawn to her red dress which could be used to symbolise her blood and her death.

Finally, an establishing shot is used to set the scene and location of the film. We are shown a city of bright lights and dark shadows. A classic for a film noir.
