What is a PSA?Public Service Announcements
(PSA) educate citizens about issues that are difficult to deal with: homelessness, global warming, breast cancer, animal welfare, AIDS, etc...
PSAs give citizens information about these issues so that they can think about them and then take positive action.
GOAL
Your task is to educate students about the causes and/or effects of your SERVICE LEARNING TOPIC and to provide them with kid-friendly ways to take action.
ROLE
Your job is to ADVOCATE for YOUR SERVICE TOPIC.
•An advocate supports and promotes a cause.
AUDIENCEThe target audience is
Middle School Students
SITUATIONYou need to convince your peers to
take action to support your cause. • Each PSA will educate your peers
and deliver a strong message on YOUR SERVICE LEARNING TOPIC.
• Each PSA will use Emotional Appeal as a rhetorical device.– Emotional appeal is a persuasive technique
that uses words/pictures that elicit a strong emotion from the audience. Therefore, the audience would be more likely to support your cause.
PRODUCTYou need to Plan and Produce
your own PSA on YOUR SERVICE LEARNING TOPIC in a brief 30 second imovie, pivot, ppt, WindowsMoviemaker, etc
OR a 3 paragraph newspaper article for the NEWSIES (prior approval necessary)
STANDARDSYour PSA should
Educate the public (use attention grabbing facts)
Provide a kid-friendly way to take action
Provide a reliable website to go for more information
Use emotional appealUse graphics, photos, images that
FACTUALLY represent your topicUse narration and/or music
STEPS
1) Research factual information and data on your social issue. Record your sources.
2) Develop a storyboard to outline your video or outline for newspaper article
3) Produce or write your own PSA
4) Include a Works Cited Section with a list of sources at the end of your PSA. This includes sources for pictures/images.

Due Date: Tuesday, March 9th
How to Submit PSAs:PSAs must be on VHS, DVDs, CDs, or flash drives OR email the PSA file & include all music files to social studies teacher
