Visit to the Intelligent Farmer Project Saturday 24 August 2013

35

The Intelligent Farmer Project is an initiative by the

University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce

(UTCC) to demonstrate His Majesty's New Theory

of integrated sustainable agriculture to farmers.

The project, also called “1 rai 1 saen”, is a 5 month

course for farmers to learn how they can make

100,000 baht/month through chemical-free farming

methods and a mindset of self-reliance.

Guided by Khun Adisorn Puangchompu, Advisor to

the Thai Chamber of Commerce and President of

the Intelligent Farmer Project, and his team, this

trip offered insights for long-term solutions to

various issues including farmers’ debt,

environmental degradation, health risks from food,

price fluctuation to government subsidies.

The Intelligent Farmer Project is a solution not only

for farmers but to society as whole in terms of the

potential to produce quality food as preventative

medicine and strengthen Thai society through a

holistic approach from the ground up.

Biofuel Tour: Visit to Pig Family Ratchaburi Saturday 14 December 2013

39

Have you ever seen or smelled a pig sty?

If you have, you'll know why people build pig farms

far away from civilization. You'll know why pig farms

are sometimes chased away from communities that

can no longer stand the impact of the animals on the

quality of life in the area.

Pig Family began as one of those farms, periodically

re-locating in response to community demand. One

farmer decided that there must be a better way, and

did his homework. He found a way to control the

smell and other waste, and to endear his farm to the

local community by providing jobs, food, and

electricity to his neighbors. Far from demanding him

to move on, the people in his village admire and

support the work of Khun Vichien and his relatives.

Compassion Symposium Gen Y: The Y’s of Compassion

43

In a world engulfed in conflict and violence, calls for more compassion

have never been louder, but the question on everyone's mind is "What is

compassion?". The definition of compassion has never been more

disparate and individualistic, leading to a wide variety of approaches in

each individual's career and personal life. Nonetheless, we believe that the

world needs a more unified definition and approach in translating

compassion to action in order for the world to be a better place.

Founded by Director Nick as a Young Global Leader, the Bangkok Hub of

the Global Shapers Community (an initiative of the World Economic

Forum), co-hosted the “Compassion Symposium” for Generation Y (under

30s) with Sasin, Sasin Alumni Association (SAA), and the B. Grimm Group

on 9 March 2013 at Sasin Hall. Chief of Operations Alex and Sustainability

Manager Prae were two of the moderators.

The symposium aimed to kick-start the concept of compassion in

Generation Y’s work and life and to spark an internal dialogue of

compassion with every participant. The Symposium explored the dynamic

nature of compassion through keynote speeches and panels by thought

leaders and practitioners from a broad range of perspectives in Thai

society.

Look out for the for the next Compassion event at Sasin and join us in

2014.

The Net Impact Conference 2013

58

Have you ever been in a room with 3,000

like-minded people who want to create

positive change through the power of

business? Have you ever seen conference

attendees with their own reusable water

bottles? Have you ever listened to more than

2 inspirational business people per day for 3

days straight and have the chance to

exchange business cards with them? The

Net Impact Conference 2013 in San Jose,

CA on 24-26 October is one of the best

events I’ve ever attended.

Whether it was the opening keynote, a

breakout session, the visual presence of the

corporate sponsors, there was a lot of

emphasis on the following ideas.

• Profit Without Pollution

• Business is Power for Change

• Leadership for Change is needed
