What is a Coalition?

• A formal arrangement for collaboration among different sectors of the community

• Each sector/member agrees to work toward a common goal such as a safe, healthy, drug-free community

• Coalitions are directed by community and sector members who help determine the best strategies

• Effective coalitions change community norms, attitudes, behaviors, systems and environments.

Low Perceived Risk

• Not as dangerous as other drugs

• Consequences are minimal

– Probably won’t get arrested

• Not enough manpower for enforcement

• Will probably get taken home

– Sentencing minimal

The Wisdom of the Group

• Solving the problem of underage and binge

drinking in 14 – 25 year olds is a coordination

and cooperation problem

• To be wise, group should be:

– Diverse

– Independent

– Decentralized

• Exercise set up to take advantage of these

conditionsJanuary 20, 2011 Coalition Meeting

Page 23: SCAD Coalition January Meeting

Small Groups / Large Group

• Each group has a facilitator

• Each group needs a recorder and reporter

• Groups will have 45 minutes to ―discover‖ their

collective wisdom

• Following small group work, each group will

report back to the larger group.

• Large group will have some time to reflect on

today’s meeting and plan for next steps

January 20, 2011 Coalition Meeting

Small Group Directions

5 minutes - Round Robin Introductions

– Name / Sector / Hopes – Concerns

5 minutes - Five minute worksheet (quiet time for

the ―independent‖ condition)

15 minutes – RR sharing for contributing factors

10 minutes – Combine ideas / prioritize

5 minutes – Other issues for coalition to address

5 minutes – Prepare report for large group

Reflections on Today’s Work

• Positives • Needs Improvement

January 20, 2011 Coalition Meeting

Page 28: SCAD Coalition January Meeting

Next Steps

• Continue to reflect on what you learned today

– Think about how coalition makes your work

easier/harder

– Think about what skills you have and are willing to

offer

• Please respond to a follow-up email that will ask

if you are willing to continue as a coalition

member or at least attend one more meeting

• Keep in touch with your ideas

Next meeting: Environmental

Strategies

• Providing information

• Enhancing Skills

• Providing support

• Enhancing access / reduce barriers

• Changing consequences

• Changing the physical design of the environment

• Modifying / changing policies
