What is a Coalition?
• A formal arrangement for collaboration among different sectors of the community
• Each sector/member agrees to work toward a common goal such as a safe, healthy, drug-free community
• Coalitions are directed by community and sector members who help determine the best strategies
• Effective coalitions change community norms, attitudes, behaviors, systems and environments.

Sectors Required for Developing Coalitions grant
•Youth (persons ≤ 18 years of age)• Parents• Business community• Media• Schools• Organizations serving youth• Law enforcement • Religious or fraternal organizations• Civic and volunteer groups• Healthcare professionals• State/local agencies w/ expertise in substance abuse• Organizations involved in reducing substance abuse

Grant focus:
• Form coalition (look beyond funded issues)• Reduce underage and binge drinking in 14 -
25 year olds
• Reduce access to tobacco for minors
For developing coalitions, creating a strategy and implementation plan to reduce underage and binge drinking in 14 – 17 year olds will make us eligible for a second year of funding. (June 30, 2011)

The Wisdom of the Group
• Solving the problem of underage and binge
drinking in 14 – 25 year olds is a coordination
and cooperation problem
• To be wise, group should be:
– Diverse
– Independent
– Decentralized
• Exercise set up to take advantage of these

• Groups will have 45 minutes to ―discover‖ their
collective wisdom
