1. Rough Cut Feedback Cyndi Lauper Girls Just Want to Have
Fun
2. ROUGH CUT After uploading the Rough Cut of our music video,
we were interested in the feedback that we wanted to receive. We
wanted to upload a Rough Cut of our music video in order to show
our development throughout the entire process of making our video.
We felt this was necessary as we felt that the Rough Cut that we
produced showed promise, yet we did want to receive feedback in
order to improve certain aspects of the video, to make sure that we
could directly appeal to our target audience.
3. LIP SYNC
4. We asked our teachers what they thought of the initial draft
ofthe video and we received a very positive response. However, they
alerted us to some issues that should be changed before we finished
the product. Firstly, they told us that the lip syncing did not
match exactly in some places. This would obviously not suffice, as
every other professional music video we watched was in perfect sync
with the lyrics of the song playing over the action. We discovered
that this was because we edited certain parts of the video at
different times, which made the previous edited clips come out of
sync. For instance, we would edit the latter half of the video
before the first, meaning that the previously edited clips were
jolted out of time. Therefore, we went back and tried to change the
duration of clips in order to correctly match the lip syncing to
the song.
5. LONG SHOTS
6. Another issue we were told was that some of the clips were
too long. This disrupted the pace of the song as the action on
screen did not match the fast pace of the song. Specifically, when
our main character walks up the stairs towards the station. Our
teachers felt that this scene was relatively boring, as no other
action was taking place and our main actor was not actually smiling
through the duration of the shot, making the Fun atmosphere we were
trying to create diminish slightly. Therefore, we deleted an entire
shot from the station scene to make the action flow more smoothly.
This feedback alerted us to the fact that we had short, extra
footage that we could use, for instance, a short two second clip of
our main actor dancing.
7. CLUB SCENES
8. We added the Club Scenes at the end of the initial video as
wewanted to show a progression throughout the day. For instance,
she would start out by going to London for a morning with her first
friend, then progress to an afternoon Ski activity with her second
friend, when finally attending a club with a group in the evening.
However, after watching professional music videos, we found that
the scenes were usually staggered, meaning that there were many
jump cuts in between the main action. The way that the club scenes
are presented in the Rough Cut were one after the other, taking up
approximately 10 seconds of the entire video. Each shot was
relatively similar, and it broke away from the fast action we saw
previously. Therefore, we decided to separate the shots, adding
parts of the white background into break the club scenes up. We
felt that this left our audience less confused, and more
entertained.
9. TITLE SHOT
10. The most crucial mistake however, was that we had misspelt
theartists name at the beginning of our video. Spelling "Cydni"
rather than "Cyndi". Obviously, this was a unintentional error
which we had made in our haste to complete the final video in the
time limit. Not only was this a crucial part of the video to get
wrong, it was also an extremely embarrassing mistake! However, as
we had uploaded a Rough Cut, we were able to quicklyalter our error
in time for the final video. This is a significant example as to
how helpful a Rough Cut can be when one is in the process of
creating a media product. Had we not noticed this mistake, we would
have ruined the entire feel to the video from the outset, as our
audiences would take our video as a joke, and believe that we were
not taking the project seriously enough.
11. EVALUATION After making these vital changes, we noticed
that we were too shortof footage. Therefore, we decided to trim the
song by 10 seconds. Although this was something we wished we could
have avoided, we wanted our video to be of the best possible
standard which meant cutting out certain clips and shortening those
already existing. We found out that we could easily fade the song
out a little earlier than planned as we wanted our final video to
be exciting and entertaining, as supposed to our audiences being
bored with the action because the clips were too long.
